What Scares The Guy Who Wrote Contagion More Than Ebola
In case you hadn't noticed, Ebola has kind of become a hot topic in our news media. The 24-hour news stations are broadcasting around-the-clock coverage of the dangerous disease, and fear is on high around the country as a result. But while most people are afraid of a larger outbreak and their organs turning to mush and dripping out their orifices, it turns out that's not what scares the screenwriter behind the 2011 Steven Soderbergh-directed outbreak thriller Contagion.

Soderbergh Says Male Stripper Film Magic Mike Is A Realistic, Altman-esque Comedy
While it might not be surprising to hear that a movie about male strippers is funny, especially given that first image of Matthew McConaughey in a skimpy Uncle Sam outfit that you see above. But you really never know with Soderbergh, especially since he recently took the seemingly cheesy idea of an ensemble of actors facing a deadly, world-ending foe and turned it into Contagion

Steven Soderbergh Moving From U.N.C.L.E. To The Bitter Pill
The Oscar-winning filmmaker will reteam with Scott Z. Burns (The Informant!, Contagion) for a thriller titled The Bitter Pill. As with most of Soderbergh’s projects, details are being kept under wraps for the time being, though THR hints that the story will be set “in the world of psychopharmacology” (whatever that could possibly mean).

Weekend Box Office: Contagion Spreads To Number One
After sitting at number one for a solid 25 days straight (the longest stretch since 1999 when The Sixth Sense held the post for 35 days in a row) The Help finally took a break and settled for second place, making room for newcomer Contagion to rule the weekend. With $23 million in the bank Contagion brings some relief to the floudering box office which hasn't seen a new movie break $20 million since The Help opened a month ago. Good news for the box office, but only so-so for the film itself.

Strength In Numbers: The 7 Best Uses Of An Ensemble Cast In Film
One can easily make the argument that storytelling is fully dependent on rich, full characters. Great ones can make us cheer when the hero wins in the end or bring us to tears when they lose. Strong personalities can organically inform decisions that, in turn, create realistic plot points and keep the story moving. If the audience doesn’t care about the protagonist, they have no incentive to keep paying attention. It’s because characters are so vital that ensemble movies make for a terrific challenge.

Watch This: Contagion Billboards Made Out Of Bacteria And Fungi
Perhaps its because I spend a good portion of every day looking at ordinary film advertisements, but I really love creative marketing. Movies have gotten so expensive and and studios have become so risk averse that every trailer and poster is simply a different version of an idea we've seen 1,000 times before.

Oscar Winners Fighting For Space On Steven Soderbergh's Latest Contagion Poster
There are two sides to the Steven Soderbergh coin. On one side is an indie director interested in crafting small, quiet but personal releases that may or may not be seen by a mainstream audience (see Bubble or his two part Che, if you haven’t already). Then there’s the Soderbergh who’s remarkably comfortable guiding gobs of A-listers through intricate thrillers
