Hotel Transylvania Synopsis

Welcome to the Hotel Transylvania, Dracula’s (Adam Sandler) lavish five-stake resort, where monsters and their families can live it up, free to be the monsters they are without humans to bother them. On one special weekend, Dracula has invited some of the world’s most famous monsters – Frankenstein and his bride, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, a family of werewolves, and more – to celebrate his daughter Mavis’s 118th birthday. For Drac, catering to all of these legendary monsters is no problem – but his world could come crashing down when one ordinary guy stumbles on the hotel and takes a shine to Mavis.

Hotel Transylvania 2 Is In The Works Hotel Transylvania 2 Is In The Works
If you'll pardon the pun, Hotel Transylvania really was a monster hit (sorry, I just really couldn't resist). Costing a tight $85 million for Sony Pictures Animation, the film managed to pull down more than $250 million globally and while it didn't overwhelm critics it managed to get a few positive marks. So naturally it's taking the standard Hollywood path and prepping part two.

Earlier this summer, Pixar told the story of a young woman determined to change her fate. The theme of a daughter on the verge of adulthood seems to be a common thread between Brave and Columbia Picture's animated film Hotel Transylvania, as evidenced by this new clip for the movie.

As you may have heard, That's My Boy, the new comedy starring Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg, did not have that much success last week when it arrived in theaters. In fact, it was a total and utter disaster. Not only was the movie absolutely crushed by critics (it currently stands with a 24% on Rotten Tomatoes), but it was a total box office bomb, making only $13 million and opening in fourth place.

The trailer for Hotel Transylvania was pretty much an exact, albeit extended, copy of the already disappointing teaser. They both start with some beautiful animated imagery (set to Toscanini's Symphony No. 9, bound to make anything more rousing) with a glimpse at some great looking monsters and landscapes only to again disappoint with some shoddy dialogue and miss-and-miss gags (because none hit).

Now, some—myself included—have sneered at the voice cast, peopled as it is with such stale comedic talent as Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, David Spade, Kevin James and Fran Drescher. Still, there was hope that Hotel Transylvania's director, animation master Genndy Tartakovsky, who created such imaginative cartoons as Samurai Jack and Dexter's Labortatory, would manifest something incredible from the hokey premise and mediocre cast.

Hotel Transylvania boasts a number of noteworthy celebrities, including Kevin James as Frankenstein's monster, David Spade as an invisible—and surely snarky—man, David Koechner (Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy) as Quasimodo, and rapper Cee-Lo as Murray the Mummy. Perhaps it's just the stripes on the stockings, but is anyone else getting a Lydia Deetz vibe from this design? This will be only the second time that Cyrus has provided a voice for an animated film, the first being the 2008 Walt Disney Animation film Bolt (which earned high praises from critics when it came out).

Adam Sandler has only lent his voice to two movies and both turned out pretty damn awful. The first was Eight Crazy Nights, the animated film that was meant to capitalize on Sandler's famous "Chanukah Song" and the other was this past summer's Zookeeper. Both projects were absolutely trashed by critics (they have an average score of 13% on Rotten Tomatoes) but perhaps the third time will the charm.
