The To Do List Synopsis

Loosely inspired by the real-life adventures of first-time writer/director Maggie Carey, “The To Do List” is a heartfelt comedy about close friends and a special summer project. Set in 1993, valedictorian Brandy Klark (Aubrey Plaza) wants to shed her uptight image before college, so she assembles a to do list of all the “activities” she missed out on in high school. Quickly realizing that she's way out of her depth, Brandy solicits her best friends (Alia Shawkat, Sarah Steele, Donald Glover, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Johnny Simmons), older sister (Rachel Bilson) and burnt-out boss (Bill Hader) for their help and advice. If the group is going to complete the list by September they'll need plenty of imagination and very open minds.

One element that gives this project an interesting spin is that the story is set in the 90s, rather than in the present day. Ideally it could turn out to be something like Dazed and Confused or American Graffitti and really capture the spirit of the decade, but watching this trailer it's kind of hard to tell if it will trying that hard. Then again, if it wants to just focus on crude humor that's more than fine too - provided it's actually funny.

In between the jarring quick cuts you can also get a sense of the killer cast backing Plaza up, from up-and-coming comedians (Donald Glover, Adam Pally, Christopher Mintz-Plasse) to established ones (Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, Alia Shawkat) to familiar faces who just seem to be on board for the fun of it (Clark Gregg, Connie Britton, Rachel Bilson).

This has been a big year for Aubrey Plaza. In addition to being a part of another amazing season of Parks and Recreation as the ridiculously sardonic and sarcastic April Ludgate, she starred alongside Mark Duplass in the critically-loved indie Safety Not Guaranteed; wrapped production on both Roman Coppola's A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III and Fredrik Bond's The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman...

There are some projects that go into pre-production with titles that you just know you'll never see on a poster at the local cinema. From A Couple of Dicks (changed to Cop Out) to Fuckbuddies (changed to No Strings Attached), there's a certain point where the studio or the MPAA steps in to wag their fingers and shake their heads.

When Carey held a staged reading of the script back in October, with Plaza already in the lead, it was unclear if the movie would ever receive financing or see the light of day. Happily that reading seems to have done exactly what they were hoping for, with money in place and a cast rapidly assembling

Hollywood may be shying away from R-rated dramas and action movies, but for some reason this formula of censorship and profit based on fear hasn’t yet been applied to comedies. R-rated comedies are still just as in vogue as they were back when Judd Apatow was still directing good ones.
