Arrest Warrant Issued For Wesley Snipes

By Pete Quince: 2006-10-18 00:00:00
Arrest Warrant Issued For Wesley Snipes Wesley Snipes has been a wanted man in Hollywood for a long time because in general he's a bankable star. Now he's wanted by the law, presumably for the same reason. Uncle Sam's more interested, though, in what exactly Wesley did with all that money he banked. An arrest warrant has been issued for Snipes on charges that he hasn't been ponying up what he owes the government. Instead he has allegedly been fraudulently collecting refunds to the tune of $12 million. I knew real estate prices were putting pressure on Hollywood's elite, but this is ridiculous.

The warrant has been issued but officials are telling CNN that they don't know where Snipes can be found. They might try on the set of Gallowwalker the film Snipes is supposed to be working on at present. If that doesn't work, try looking for very buff black women with really bad weaves. If Snipes has gone into hiding he has some pretty good drag disguises left over from his "To Wong Foo" days.

Federal prosecutors say that Snipes sveltly conned the government out of more money than he was owed and also failed to pay taxes at all between 1999 and 2004. Granted, in general that was something of a dry spell for Wesley, but I'm pretty sure his salaries from Blade II and Blade Trinity weren't exactly tax exempt. I seriously doubt Snipes did his own 1040s, but in the end each individual tax payer is still responsible for their own taxes, no matter who prepared (or didn't prepare) them.

So, what does this mean for the man? Maximum penalty of 16 years in prison. Will he do that time? C'mon, are you kidding? If OJ Simpson can get off the hook for murder, the next Johnny Cochran out there can weasel Wesley out of back tax problems. Granted, tax fraud and financial issues are slightly less open to legal interpretation, but when it comes to celebrities, smoke and mirror theatrics work no matter what the charges.

  • The chances of Wesley doing time are slim and none. I remember that other celebs, e.g. Willie Nelson, had similar problems. The Gov wants their money and they don't get it if they put these high profile, high earning celebs in the slammer.
