Former New Jersey governor Jim McGreevey has revealed the details of the gay affair he had while his wife Dina was in the hospital having their child. You want to feel bad for him for having to stay in the closet so long, but it's kind of hard to be sympathetic when a guy goes and does something like that.
For those of you with short memories, McGreevey voluntarily left the office of governor of the state of New Jersey in 2004 after coming out of the closet.
Our friends at M&C have the details on his secret life while in office. He reveals it all in his new book, where he says "I was totally in love with this man," speaking of Golan Cipel his Israeli lover.
Now McGreevey is out talking to everyone. Tuesday he appeared on Oprah where he admitted that he only told his wife about his homosexuality because Cipel threatened to blackmail him. It's that threat which gave him the courage to come out. Fear of discovery can be a pretty strong motivator. I don't think I'd call it courage though, more like logical self-interest.
Expect to hear more from McGreevey in coming weeks. There's even a rumor that he may get a permanent gig on a new "View" style talkshow.
