Congratulations? After more than two and a half years of being separated, former Friends star Courteney Cox and her husband actor David Arquette have finally disentangled themselves, at least legally. Earlier this week, a judge officially closed the door on their relationship by approving the divorce paperwork, and while none of the specifics have been made public, it’s pretty easy to guess what happened.

Despite separating, Cox and Arquette have remained on remarkably good terms. According to TMZ, for more than two years after initially splitting, they didn’t even file for divorce, which is probably a good indication of why they both agreed to joint physical and legal custody of their daughter Coco without any kind of issue. Since the ruling isn’t available, we don’t know for sure that their request was granted, but as a general rule, judges aren’t typically in the business of refusing agreements from happy, sensible couples trying to cooperate and coparent on good terms.

Cox and Arquette have made it very clear over the past few years that they will remain friends while they go about raising Coco. Right now, every piece of evidence indicates they will do exactly that. For the sake of their daughter, I hope they’re dedicated enough to follow through on that vow for the next decade. After all, just because they’re separated doesn’t mean they can’t focus on all of the wonderful memories and all of the great projects they’re still creating together.
