Crocodile Hunter Dies Doing What He Loved

By Scott Gwin: 2006-09-04 00:00:00
Crocodile Hunter Dies Doing What He Loved When someone plays with crocodiles and deadly poisonous snakes as often as Steve Irwin did, you wonder every now and again if one of these days it just might catch up with them. Sadly enough, it wasn't anything all that dangerous that took the life of the man we all knew as The Crocodile Hunter.

CNN reported today that Steve Irwin was killed when a stingray pierced him in the chest. Irwin's manager reported that The Crocodile Man was snorkeling in an area in the Great Barrier Reef on Monday morning when "he came over the top of a stingray that was buried in the sand, and the barb came up and hit him in the chest."

At the time Irwin, 44, was at the Reef to film segments for Jacque Cousteau's grandson's show, "The Oceans Deadliest Creatures". However, due to weather, they weren't filming for that show so Irwin had moved elsewhere to film some shots for a gentler show he was working on with and for his daughter, Bindi.

"The world has lost a great wildlife icon, a passionate conservationist and one of the proudest dads on the planet," said Stanton. "He died doing what he loved best and left this world in a happy and peaceful state of mind. He would have said, 'Crocs Rule!'" I'm not sure a husband and father of small children can leave the world in a peaceful state of mind, but at least he was doing what he enjoyed most.

The world will be a little less exciting without the Crocodile Man around. We'll miss ya, mate.
