Much to the annoyance of Keeping Up With The Kardashian fans and gossip whores the world over, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have not yet released their newborn daughter’s name. At first, the assumption was the couple wanted to maintain a little privacy and/ or save the announcement for a possible reality show or news program down the road. If new rumors are to be believed, however, there’s actually a far stranger reason in play.
According to People, Kim and Kanye haven’t agreed on a name yet. They’re apparently leaning toward either a few possible choices or even a single choice, but they allegedly haven’t officially picked the handle yet. Assuming that’s true, it begs a really interesting question: is refusing to name a baby in a timely manner poor form?
A strong case could be made that few things affect a child’s life more than his or her name. Given the kid has absolutely no say in it, that might not be fair, but it’s the truth of the matter, which is why it seems so strange that a human being could exist for any period of time without a moniker to be known by legally and to be called by those who know the child. In fact, it kind of seems like a dick move on the parents part, but seems like a dick move and is a dick move are two different things.
On the one hand, while the exact dates aren’t known, it’s generally accepted that the reality star gave birth about a month early. Consequently, she and Kanye likely thought they had a whole lot more time to work on the naming process and come to a firm choice. Also, babies have no idea what’s going on. They’re not cognizantly aware of the fact that their birth certificates have been or have not been filled out yet. They’re just worried about drinking milk and sleeping. On the other hand, however, they still had months including several after they knew the baby’s sex to come to a decision, and that apparently never happened, which is almost an essay on indecision. The child might not be aware of what their name is, but that doesn’t mean they can’t start learning and recognizing it pretty early on. Besides, what the hell could possibly be a legitimate reason not to name the kid?
Personally, I think Kim and Kanye owe it to their kid to pick a goddamn lane and move forward. I think they owe it to the young girl to make a decision, but there are other parents who want to spend time with their child before committing to something as important as a name.
What do you think? Do parents owe it to their children to pick names immediately? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
