Is Fame Beginning To Swell Taylor Hicks' Head?

By Scott Gwin: 2006-09-29 00:00:00
Is Fame Beginning To Swell Taylor Hicks' Head? Is fame beginning to get to Taylor Hicks? The seemingly sweet and down to earth performer who swooned the hearts of America's Idol worshippers revealed a bit of a nasty egotistical side when he wasn't immediately seated at Seattle's Union Bay Café. Is Mr. Hicks' head getting a little too big for his hat?

With a grain of salt I take the word of The National Inquirer which reports that Taylor and a trio of friends "swaggered" into the café. As one might expect, the person seating customers informed them that they would be seated in a moment. Nothing strange there, right?

Apparently Taylor doesn't have a moment to wait for things like tables and he "howled" at the manager,"Don't you know who I am?... I'm the'American Idol!'" As he stormed out he declared that he doesn't have to wait for a table anywhere.

Welcome to fame, Mr. Hicks. Your fans may swear by your southern charm and humble style, but even the most modest of folks can have their grey pated heads turned by fame and half-million dollar book deals. Here's hoping that's not the direction his attitude is turning. What's that saying about pride coming before a fall?

  • OK lets get real. First off, the National Enquirer?? How many lawsuits have been brought against this rag, and WON I might add, for their lies?? That should establish how trustworthy and believable this paper is. Second, as much as I love Taylor, don't forget that he is a mere mortal, just like the rest of us. All people have human frailties; they get tired, they get sick, they have bad days. I would think someone in the position of being in the public eye would have added pressure on top of all the everyday things. So even if Taylor should occasionally slip up and act out, can't we forgive him just as we would like to be forgiven? Taylor seems like a nice guy, and I think he's a great performer. Go Taylor! Go Soul Patrol!
  • I don't care WHO said they "were there." It's all just a big, made-up lie, spun by the Enquirer to sell a few (very few) papers. After all, anyone that knows him knows he's too shy and too much a gentleman to go off on someone in some eatery. He was raised right, unlike a lot of young people today.
And take it from one who knows. He loves what he does. It has been his life-long passion. And he LOVES his fans even more. He talks about it all the time.
I, personally, am sick of all the jealous fools (YES, jealous!) out there dissecting him like a lab rat and trying to turn a really nice guy into some horrible stuck-up celebrity (which he is NOT!) just to bring him down from his dream.
Taylor knows himself, his principles and his music and and he won't compromise it for anyone.
And, just so everyone knows, his sold-out tour is the hit of the Spring season everywhere he goes. I saw him in Nashville and his live act is AWESOME! Even the genereal media is giving him good reviews everywhere he goes.
    Take THAT, you lying Enquirer!!
  • I just met Taylor last nite in Jacksonville. The first stop on his tour. He was most gracious. Wonderful with my daughter who is 6. We love Taylor and I dont believe anybody. I know the soul I feel in my heart. He is a class act. We love you Taylor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Kathy and Sydnee Florida
  • Tay Hicks prefers McD to any fancy, hi-tone Seattle restaurant. He's a Big Mac man if I ever I saw one.
That must have been Frasier you saw there.
  • In response to the post above mine:

I also realize Taylor has been playing in bars for years and that he is a human being. (I'm from Alabama). Taylor has to realize that he didn't get where he is today by the normal means of the music business... in FACT he never could get a recording contract the old fashioned way. He got it from his fans from a TV SHOW that they watched. If not for those fans, Taylor wouldn't have anything to be upidity about. :) So, if fans want to be treated with respect, these same fans who got him to be the American Idol... I think they have a right to get that respect. A celebrity just starting out has to give back. Taylor only does so under pressure it seems. And there are countless rumors of how stuck up he has become. As a former member of the Soul Patrol it was hard for me to grasp, especially since he has spent a decade trying to get to be somebody. He isn't an idiot and must know the repricusions of his attitudes.

I have no idea if this related article is true but where there is smoke there is usually fire. I have also seen what I have seen. And NO I don't LOVE HIM MORE if he makes an ass out of himself. This time last year I could have been in the same eatery with him in Birmingham BEFORE IDOL... I would have thought he was still an ass.

And you're right. I'm 40 yrs. old and my Cingular bill would NOT have been what is was for May after texting votes for Taylor.... $735. I wish I would have been in that eatery with him this time last year... I could have saved myself a bunch of money.

There's a lot of people who can sing. It takes a great person to make beautiful music by their beauty and depth on the inside. That's what I call SOUL.

That is what I was voting for.

  • I was a HUGE supporter of Taylor's. I still believe in his music... just not him. I saw first hand in August how he ditched the Big Time Soul Patrollers who all flew into Birmingham Alabama to see him play with his band at a club the night preceding the AI tour night. Being it was a KNOWN Soul Patrol convention from people off the AI boards (where Soul Patrol began) you would have thought he would have done a meet and greet with everyone. It was a regulated crowd of 300. After being told by insiders that he would be signing autographs, many waited until three in the morning. Meanwhile he ditched out and went singing at his old haunts. It was extremely disrespectful and disheartening to many of the fans who had traveled so far.

Sadly I am sure this is true and I also believe we will be hearing more and more of this. I just hope this doesn't ruin his career. He's not Elvis yet. You can't treat fans like this and remain popular. I am still a fan of his music. I'm just not a Soul Patroller any longer, which means I won't be out promoting him to friends and family and I won't be buying multiple copies of his cd's. The OOMPH is gone.

    It's very sad.
  • Who the hell cares, really. I'm a Taylor fan, have been since before Idol, and it's the pedestal that his die hard fans have put him on that make stupid incidents get blown out of proportion. I'm in constant amazement at how the media and alot of his die hard fans have created this glorious, never-do-wrong image in their heads about what he's supposed to be. He can't say a curse word without someone saying "Oh my gosh, that's just not like him!". Newsflash, you DON'T REALLY KNOW HIM. You saw him on a show where he had to behave a certain way to win. I would have done the same thing for a shot to make a fortune doing what I love.
It's time to wake up. Yes, he is a generous, well-mannered fellow. But he's also a normal guy who, before Idol, was performing in bars doing what he loves for years, yes, that's right, he played in BARS *gasp*, and he is who he is. Supporting an entertainer because of the persona they project is fine, if you're buying their stuff for your 12 year old. Otherwise, why care?
Love it or hate it, ACCEPT IT, move on. He's human. If anything, you should love him more for it.
  • The National Enquirer, hmmmmm, now there's a great source for all the latest.
Right, the latest in trash that is.

Anyone who knows Taylor, simply laughs at things like that, and needless to say, I'm still laughing.

If you think this is going to have any reflection on Taylor and his billions of fans, think again sweetie.

Still LOL.....and I bet Taylor is too.

Move on National Enquirer, like someone said in an earlier comment, shouldn't you be looking for Kevin?
  • PLEASE, AS IF! TAYLOR IS SO NOT ABOUT TO SAY ANYTHING LIKE THAT.
IF ANYTHING NEGATIVE IS WRITTEN ABOUT TAYLOR, IT IS OBVIOUSLY A LIE.
    WAS THAT JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE AGAIN?
TAYLOR HAS HAD MANY CHANCES TO BE RUDE, OR AS THEY SAY "LET FAME SWELL HIS HEAD", BUT HE IS TOO MUCH OF A GENTLEMAN TO DO SUCH A THING.
SIMON FOR ONE, WAS NOT THAT KIND BUT TAYLOR SMILED HIS HEAVENLY SMILE AND LET IT GO.
WHY CAN'T YOU PEOPLE LEAVE HIM ALONE. HE HAS NEVER SAID A MEAN THING ABOUT OR TO ANYONE YET HATEFUL AND JEALOUS PEOPLE CONTINUE TO...AND I WILL QUOTE ONE OF HIS SONGS....."STAB AT HIS HEART".
BUT LIKE HIS SONG ALSO SAYS, HE WILL SMILE BACK AT THEM NOT KNOWING WHO THEY ARE.
GOD BLESS YOUR WONDERFUL HEART TAYLOR, AND I KNOW YOU WILL FOREVER BE THE BRIGHTEST STAR THAT SHINES ON THIS EARTH.
YOU MAKE SO MANY PROUD AND WE ALL LOVE YOU. SOUL PATROL FOREVER AND EVER AMEN.
GOD BLESS AMERICA & GOD BLESS TAYLOR.

    from June in Vermont.
  • You should be ashamed to quote anything out of the National Inquirer! Why would you do that..cause you know you would recieve lots and lots of email defending Taylor..right? LOL He never did such a thing and WE are all pretty certain of that.
  • I am not surprised to hear that once again Hicks is being arrogant. There has been multiple reports of Hicks skipping out on fan meets to go clubbing and drinking with his old band. Totally dissing the old folks and youngsters who voted for him. There has been reports on how uncooperative he is backstage while the rest of the idols are very nice. Just watch the cameras closely and anyone but a rabid fan can see how irritated Hicks gets if the interviewer dares to talk to any other idol but him. There will be more coming from Hicks closet.
  • I was there. He was rude. Deal with it Taylor fans! I am not surprised at all. Boy thinks his sh*t don't stink now.
  • This story is as much rubbish as the Enquirer is famous for printing,Taylor would never display this behaviour. He is kind, generous, he knows where he has come from and where he is going and how to get there and it would not be acting this way. Please give people a break !! This man has worked so hard to reach this point in his career, stop trying to tear him down, good grief can no one be happy for any ones success?? Taylor will not be changed by his success, what you see with him is exactely what you get,not a pretentious bone in his body!! Must be a short news day to publish such an article.
  • bragging rights remember.... maybe he was just joking around if he really did say that.... I mean I would blurt that out just to be a nut....
  • How funny. I'm laughing at just the thought. I'm sure Taylor
himself would laugh at this as well. Taylor is a class act and
one of the sweetest people I have ever met. Never happened.
    I needed a good laugh Thanks ;)
  • Justin Timberflake must be some broke to sell this lie to the only rag that would print it.
Tay: get used to it, baby, but don't ever doubt the loyalty and intelligence of Your Soul Patrol.
  • This story is just simply not credible.

As a fan of Taylor, there is no way he said I am the winner of AI. Just not his style.

One of the classiest guys around. Won't fit in Hollywierd.
  • Taylor Hicks has spent more than three months on tour and earned a reputation as one of the most generious entertainers around, by meeting with the public before and after every performance ... signing autographs ... posing in pictures and doing everything short of filling out tax forms for his fans.
I'm skeptical this incident occured. Taylor is far too clever and media savy to act like that ... oh and also too classy in general.
  • Mr Taylor Hicks is the most kindest person I have ever met. Wooooo Go Soul Patrol
  • Well you know you've made "the big time" when the gossip rags start making up stuff about you just to boost sales!
  • I thought about this today, and I don't believe a word of it!! Taylor was not brought up to be disrespectful that way..He comes from a great family...Love you Taylor...Rock On!!!...Deborah
  • It took Taylor ten years to get to where he is today and he knows he's got much further to go. Taylor doesn't brag and Taylor doesn't talk like that. You posted a magazine that prints trash and expect us to believe it. You must not know Taylor and by the way, what cafe? When did it happen? No dates or names. THIS NEVER HAPPENED!!!
  • Taylor Hicks is a classy, humble, nice human being. He would never do such a thing. He knows how long it took him to get to where he is right now. To quote the National Inquirer when the guy is totally the opposite of what you wrote is plain foolish. I don't believe it for a minute. Taylor wouldn't do that.Don't take us too seriously. I'm not.
  • after hearing where this story came from, I am happy to say that I dont believe it for a minute. First I was upset and didnt think it sounded like that shy, humble, lovable person we all know as Taylor Hicks, but now I know it wasnt. HOpefully no one else will take their word on this trashy story
