Jack White has never been a big fan of interviews, and now, we might have a pretty good indication of why. This morning, a quote from the singer was passed around the Internet in which he bashes Lady Gaga and calls the pop star “artifice”. His aggressive middle finger didn’t sit well with many of her fans, and it didn’t sit well with many journalists either. If White is to be believed, however, the whole thing was taken out of context.
According to MTV, White claims the quote came out of a conversation he had with Esquire’s writer about Lady Gaga’s preference to be over the top and avant garde with her fashion choices. He doesn’t think there’s anything going on below the surface and thus, doesn’t get what she’s doing. Here’s a look at a portion of his actual explanation…
"I never said anything about her music, or questioned the authenticity of her songs in any way.”
In his detailed explanation, White went on to praise Lady Gaga for all the contributions she’s made to gay rights causes and said her work has created plenty of positive momentum. To some, this explanation has been more than enough to explain exactly what happened and why he wasn’t in the wrong, but to other hardcore Lady Gaga fans, his words have come off more as a non-apology that points the finger at everyone else but himself.
Regardless of what he meant to say, the fashion angle is very interesting. Some of Gaga’s biggest supporters will tell you the way she presents herself is worthwhile and fascinating, while others will tell you it’s nothing more than an attention grab. What do you think? Does Lady Gaga deserved to be bashed for how she presents herself? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
