Kanye West has never been among the more humble of celebrities. In fact, while some stars might marginalize their own talent, there’s probably not a single human being in the world who thinks more of Kanye than the rapper himself. That egotism was on full display during a recent sitdown with BBC Radio 1 personality Zane Lowe, and not surprisingly, the specific quotes are turning some heads.
During the fifteen minute sitdown, the first of four parts, West claimed to be the single biggest star in the world and openly talked about his struggles to get past the “glass ceiling” Michael Jackson could never break through. Seriously. Take a look at a few of those quotes courtesy of The New York Daily News…
"Rap is the new rock 'n' roll. We the new rock stars, and I'm the biggest of all of them. I'm the No. 1 rock star on the planet."
"I would not be Kanye West if it wasn't for Michael Jackson. I was able to ascend to massive heights, and I've got to a point that Michael Jackson did not break down. I have reached the glass ceiling, as a creative person, as a celebrity and I've been at it for 10 years."
Let’s be honest. Those quotes make Kanye sound like a first class jackass. They make him sound like a conceited blowhard, but just because they don’t exactly paint him in the best color doesn’t mean his words are necessarily wrong. In many ways, rap has replaced Rock N Roll as the dominant medium, and among rappers, he might actually be at the top of the heap. Sure, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne and Eminem and 2 Chainz and Flo Rida and Drake would have something to say about that, but it’s certainly not absurd that someone would think he’s the biggest game in (and out of) town.
So, as much as it pains me to say it, Kanye could actually be right. What do you think? Is he the biggest rock star on the planet? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
