Matthew Perry has been battling alcohol and other substance abuse for quite some time. At one point he revealed an addiction going all the way back to 1997, and while he has done more than one stint in rehab facilities, he’s never truly recovered. The real miracle is not just that he’s still alive after all this, but that he’s stayed out of the limelight as much as he has in recent years. Perhaps it’s sexism, perhaps it’s a good publicist, but he’s done what Lohan and company have been unable to do: not destroy his career.

Now he says he’s taking a month off of show business, which shouldn’t be a problem considering his latest television venture, Mr. Sunshine flopped like a dying fish. He told TMZ his rehabilitation plans, saying, "I'm making plans to go away for a month to focus on my sobriety and to continue my life in recovery," and instructed us all to "Please enjoy making fun of me on the world wide web.” Can do, Mr. Perry: way to date yourself by referring to the Internet as the world wide web. The Friends star’s publicist confirmed to Reuters that while Perry is not yet in rehab, he will be going away shortly. The commitment clearly exists, so the trouble most likely lies with the support, or lack thereof, from his family and friends. Best of luck to Mr. Sunshine, have a speedy recovery, live long and prosper, or whatever it is you Friends say to each other.
