Earlier this summer, Miley Cyrus announced she’d let fans in on the name of her much anticipated new album the second she topped the thirteen million follower mark on Twitter. Initially, she was hoping to get there by August, but alas, it took a handful of extra days. Luckily, user number 13,000,000 finally came, and like a champ, she followed through by unleashing her album title. Not surprisingly, it’s fucking weird too.
Here’s a look at the actual announcement tweets…
Over the past year or so, Miley has grown increasingly interested in edgy urban fashion and off-beat throwback interests. She chopped off her hair and went really blonde with it. She got really excited about all activities related to twerking, and she cultivated a far rougher, no-nonsense exterior when dealing with the outside world. As such, Bangerz shouldn’t really dumbfound any observers who have followed her career closely.
Just because an album title isn’t shocking, however, doesn’t necessarily mean choosing it is the right call. First, it uses a “z” instead of an “s”. Second, clear as Miley might think it is, the handle will actually require an explanation from everyone outside of the club scene and third, it kinda comes off like it’s trying a bit too hard to intentionally be weird. It’s basically the equivalent of her naming her album ShakZ or Twiz-ERK. There’s nothing deep or thoughtful about it either. It’s just how she hopes people will describe each song.
On the other hand, it’s kind of nice that Miley always marches to the beat of her own drummer. So many LPs are named after the lead single or some overly sentimental nonsense. Clearly, she has no interest in going that route and instead decided to have a little fun. At the end of the day, that’s the goal of her music too. Other people might be trying to write the next “Fire And Run” or “Hurt”. She’s trying to write the next “Like A Virgin” or “Groove Is In The Heart”.
