The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do is Fiona Apple’s second album since Extraordinary Machine dropped in 1995. The title is a wee bit shorter than the singer’s 1999 effort, When the Pawn…, but this time around—and in fewer words—Apple hops and skips between musical styles, both vulnerable and volatile in ten tracks.

The Idler Wheel’s first video, “Every Single Night” is like watching Fiona Apple claw at her brain without any actual physical impairment and if that sounds trippy, it is: giant octopuses collide with shots of miniature snails and floor dusters turn into Hawaiian huluing figurines. It’s easy enough to get distracted by the imagery, but paying attention to Apple’s face will serve you better; the anguish and rent pain there is a perfect complement to the lyrical performance “Every Single Night” delivers in its finest moments.
