Their ten year partnership as OutKast has garnered a serious following in the hip hip world, and their new musical film collaboration Idlewild has made its own little splash mark at the box office. Despite that success have Andre 3000 and Big Boi run out of common threads to bind them together?
In a story that comes out in next week's Newsweek, the two may be getting tired of each other's company. At the beginning of their interview, Andre Benjamin (Andre 3000) strode into Outkast's "pot-smoke-permeated, pit-bull-friendly Stankonia studios in Atlanta" wearing "seersucker slacks, saddle shoes, [and] a crisp white jacket." Meanwhile Antwon Patton (Big Boi) wore his usual "baggy jeans and a T shirt with a porn shot of a naked woman". Their responses to each other?
"What the f*** is that? A Members Only jacket?" jabbed Patton. "I don't know what you're talkin' about," Andre replied, "You the one still wearin' the same outfit you did in 1998."
According to the article, that's become the norm for the musical partners who may be close to going their separate ways. "Friendwise, we have no beef between us," Andre said, "but it's gotten to the point where we want to move on. It's kinda like a girlfriend-boyfriend relationship where you don't hate each other, but it's time to let loose." Big Boi was apaprently too busy to comment.
After seeing Idlewild I wouldn't mind seeing these guys part ways. If they plan to stay in the cinema realm (which I encourage neither to do) I would much rather see more musical movie action from Andre Benjamin without the Big Boi factor. The musical number that plays during Idlewild's credits shows Benjamin might have what it takes to put on more than a hip hop dog and pony show. All Patton seems to be able to offer is rapping to a whiskey flask.
