“Survivor’s” first winner, and arguably the show’s biggest star, is going to jail. That’s right Richard Hatch, dubbed the “Fat Naked Fag” by his fellow contestants, has been sentenced to a whopping four years and three months in prison for failing to pay taxes on the 1 million dollars worth of winnings he received from the CBS show “Survivor”.
Now some might say this is proof that celebrities really are subject to the same laws as the rest of us. No so. Rather this is simply proof that reality stars, no matter how well known a few of them might be, are not celebrities. It’s also proof that you’d better not mess with the IRS. That no doubt played some part in Hatch’s evisceration, the IRS is always happy to provide visible evidence of their excessive and oppressive power. It doesn’t get much more visible than this.
Hatch has also been instructed to undergo psychological counseling and to file amended tax 2000 and 2001 tax returns following his release four years from now. Not a bad idea. You’ve got to wonder what he was thinking. Did he actually believe the IRS would let him get away with it? I’m scared to death to claim my home office as a deduction, and I’m entitled to that. How could he believe he could simply skip out on giving Uncle Sam his cut? The government may be inept in other areas, but the IRS is ruthless. You might get away with it for awhile, but everyone (except big corporate executives) gets caught in the end.
The US District Court where Richard was sentenced determined that he repeatedly lied about his earnings, taxes, charitable donations, and the extent of his property ownership to the US Government. On his way to being thrown in a dark hole, Hatch continued to insist he hadn’t lied. Give it up Rich, gamesmanship won’t do you any good now.
