Friday, November 17, 2006 – an average day on the set of ‘Regis and Kelly’. Regis Philbin, long-time host, took a Friday off – not an uncommon practice. Now, your faithful reporter here is actually an avid watcher of the very light ABC morning show program, a show that features some incredible interviews and some serious star-power. So, it is no surprise that when Reege takes a break, someone of some serious juice ends up sitting in his chair next to the ever-present, ever- bubbly, ever grinning personality-on-nuclear-overload Kelly Ripa. This time, the star seat-filler was American Idol runner-up, sexually amibiguous pop star Clay Aiken.
As a regular viewer, I feel I can make a judgement, or at least a review of the program. The audience was loaded with “Claymaniacs”, the coined term for the incredibly-devoted fans of the singer. He was very kind to them, doing a lot of hugging and handshaking. He seemed to feel quite enabled, and he behaved as such, making motions indicating he was often annoyed with Kelly’s non-stop look-at-me usual performance. But it is Kelly’s show after all, and she also was apparently miffed with Aiken’s smug, they-love-me seat-squirming and feigned indifference. At one point he told Ripa she talks too much, and put his hand over her flapping lips. Kelly reacted poorly to Aiken’s face-grab, telling him his actions were a “no-no” and added,"I don't know where that hand's been, honey.''
All I took from the show is that the two didn’t get along. However, Rosie O’Donnell, who was also watching (not with me, of course) took something else from Ripa’s comeback. Commenting from her perch on ‘The View’, O’Donnell referred to the moment and claimed Kelly’s comment was homophobic in nature.
Lest we forget, Aiken has not only been boondogged in rumors concerning his yet-to-be-announced sexuality, but also by the refuted tale that Clay was involved with a former male marine, and that he put his hand in places that seem almost physically impossible.
Ripa took no time in responding, calling in to The View yesterday (November 21st) to defend her words. She slammed O’Donnell’s comment as “outrageous” , stating that Aiken's actions were disrespectful and unprofessional -- and that he was spreading germs, since he'd just shaken hands with a lot of audience members. And while Ripa and Rosie seem to have mended their fences, I’d say it’s safe to say ‘Merry Christmas With Love’ won’t be spinning in Kelly’s CD player anytime soon.

I was thrilled that Clay was going to be co-host with Kelly. I love them both. However, right at the start Kelly was antagonistic to the audience. Talking about Clay audience versus her audience. I laughed when Clay covered her mouth because I have seen Kelly do that twice to Regis. So I couldn't believe her protest on Monday. Then the talk of being afraid of germs. I have seen Kelly put her hands on guests constantly including Clay without permission. Sad as it may be I now feel that Kelly is a closet homophobe and that her comment that day about where Clay's hand might have been was a gay bash because she believes he is gay. I remember last Halloween when she dressed as Clay and proceeded to kiss Regis. I thought it was fun but now I know my ex favorite host is a homophobe. Sorry Kelly you are the one who has made us all chose sides. I chose Clay who has not said a negative word against you while you have gone a 3 day vendetta against him.
Kelly has done the exact same thing MANY times to Regis (pics are all over the internet). What a hypocrite.
And in this case she had just been in his face pushing pictures of CATS at him because she knew that he has a problem with cats. Talk about rude.
And when Clay realized that she did not enjoy what was intended to be playful interaction, he immediately apologized (and again during the break). She however was totally ungracious about the whole thing. Bringing it up on the next show and dramatizing what should have been quietly let go was totally uncalled for.
Rosie probably meant well, but should have stayed out of it. Clay has stated over and over that he is not gay. If Kelly continues to think otherwise and behaves badly because of it, it is not Rosies issue to pursue.
It was wrong of Clay to put his hand on Kelly's face, but I feel that Kelly had made her feelings known about the incident right away last Friday. Kelly's Monday morning rant on Regis and Kelly showed an ugly, vindictive streak that bothered me. On the View, on Tuesday morning, the Clay rant continued, which is ironic, because she was stressing that she has always treated all their guests with dignity.
As a gay man, I would have shoved Clay's hand off and said the same thing Kelly did and Kelly there are a lot of gay folk who know you are not a homophobe!
I'm sorry but Clay was a guest on her show. He had no right to touch her that way at all. Regis and kelly have been working to together for years now and probably know each others bounderies. But what Rosie did by jumping to conclusions about it being a gay thing was not fair to kelly at all.. And another thing has Clay even made a public anoucment about being gay???
