First, the blandly handsome host of "American Idol” took out an innocent Brian Dunkelman, never to be seen again. “E! News” gave him a slot as an anchor. Then, the “Super Bowl” decided to dilute its testosterone factor and gave him the top job. Now, what has likely been in the works for years, Variety is reporting Ryan Seacrest will be hosting the Primetime Emmy Awards in September on NBC.
Determined to leave no teleprompter unturned, Ryan Seacrest has won the highest-profile hosting gigs. With Whoopi gone to "The View", Ellen on hand to keep things dressed down and Rosie simply scaring everyone, television watchers soon won’t be able to change a channel without encountering the face only someone’s younger sister could love. Now that Dick Clark has relinquished the title of ”America’s Oldest Teenager” and Merv Griffin is off to broadcast heaven, Seacrest has positioned himself to take over entertainment television with all the subtlety of an angry mob.
A Fox executive, who believes America can still endure the diabetic shock of too much Seacrest, said, "He's a consummate host of major live broadcast events and a proven talent who always makes it look easy, which makes him the perfect choice for this year's Emmys telecast," One supposes 32 million comas can’t be wrong.
Last year’s Emmy telecast, hosted by late-night host Conan O’Brien, did nothing to break its decline in viewers, averaging only 16 million viewers, making it the fourth time in five years folks tuned elsewhere. Producers are hoping Seacrest will bring in, and keep, younger viewers, and more of them, glued to the screen when he’s reading the cue cards and telling the precisely-worded jokes, allowing no chance of a nipple slip or double entendre.
The Primetime Emmys will air September 16. The Super Bowl is to be broadcast February 3, 2008 and levels of insipidness will rise accordingly."Seacrest…out.” Not yet, but we’re working on it.
