Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ split generated an enormous amount of press. A very healthy percentage of the headlines wound up being anti-Tom Cruise and more specifically, anti-Scientology. For the most part, the actor weathered the negativity without responding, except with the stories that involved him mistreating his daughter Suri. Those allegations he took very seriously.
Back in July, Cruise threatened to sue The National Enquirer over a claim that he left his daughter in a tiny, windowless room, and now, he’s officially filed a lawsuit against In Touch and Life & Style for claiming in separate headlines that he abandoned Suri. According to CNN, the paperwork was submitted in Los Angeles this morning, and it asks for more than $50 million in damages for publishing “malicious garbage”.
Any money Cruise wins will be donated to charity after the litigation, and it is his attorney’s hope that paying a libel judgment will make both magazines think twice before moving forward with lies in the future. Here’s what lawyer Bert Fields had to say about the case…
”Tom is a caring father who dearly loves Suri. She's a vital part of his life and always will be. To say he has 'abandoned' her is a vicious lie. To say it in lurid headlines with a tearful picture of Suri is reprehensible."
During his time in the public eye, people have claimed many different things about Cruise, but to my knowledge, no one close to him has ever accused the star of not caring about his children. He has always come across as a doted father and caring person, regardless of his religious affiliation.
