Sad news from the world of fantasy literature. Robert Jordan, known best as the author of the “Wheel of Time” series of books, died on the afternoon of Sunday September 16th after more than a year battling cardiac amyloidosis. The news comes from a message left on the author’s blog.
The site says, "It is with great sadness that I tell you that the Dragon is gone. RJ left us today at 2:45 PM. He fought a valiant fight against this most horrid disease. In the end, he left peacefully and in no pain." Funeral arrangements will be posted later on the blog, and for fans interesting in sending his family their best wishes, the comments section on Jordan’s there seems to be the place to do it.
Robert Jordan was a prominent voice in modern fantasy literature. The author’s massive Wheel of Time series has long been a top seller, and with his death he leaves the series’ twelfth book unfinished and his story painfully incomplete. It was the twelfth book which was supposed to end the series, finally finishing the story of Rand al’ Thor and his friends, a finale in the making since the publishing of the first WoT book “The Eye of the World” back in 1990.
As someone who’s read all eleven books, this hurts. Not just because now we’ll never know how 17 years worth of character development ends, but because Jordan seemed like a genuinely good person who loved what he was doing and loved his fans. Right now my thoughts are with his family and friends, but from now on whenever I look at his spot on my bookshelf it’ll always be to selfishly wonder what might have been.

He wrote the end to the entire series and put it in his safe, if he died before finishing it. We'll know how it all ends at least, maybe not the middle, but definitely the end.
I am truly very sad too. I am looking over my monitor at my RJ collection right now. He was a great writer and one that you could truly like. I met him once before his disease was discovered. I have read that he revealed all plot lines to family, so who knows...
is this a hoax???? Why doesn't one single legit news site have this information? Todays Obituaries in the New York Times include some lurkers who worte poetry and were tv news reporters, but no mention of a guy who sold over 10,000,000 books in the last decade??? I'm not buying it until CNN, ABC, YAHOO or the Times tells me he's gone!!!!!
The book will be finished, he made sure of that! Robert Jordan knew the ending of the series before he even wrote it. He has made extensive notes and the final story was well on it's way to being finished, I believe it will fall on his wife Harriet (also his editor and I think published author herself) to finish.
Josh, I know how sad and upset you are. Robert Jordan's passing is a terrible thing. ...no, that's too mild. But I can't make stronger statements without sounding trite. But you almost certainly do not have to worry about the end of his most famous series. He has LONG before now made arrangements with his family and friends, in case this should happen. He's spoken about it on his blog numerous times. At some point, after they have had time to grieve, the 12th book WILL be finished, most likely by his wife Harriet, who was also his first-line -and if I understand right, his only(?)- editor. He's been working on book 12 now for a LONG time, and a large part of it is fleshed out, according to his blog. What remains to be done, will be done, next year or the year after. I do regret not ever being able to see his later-planned series, but what he has given us all will be a part of my life until the day I die, I know that much. And we will miss him.
As someone who has read all eleven books multiple times, I can tell you what he told his fans, Harriet (his wife and editor) will complete the series. She's been his collaborator and confidante for awhile now and will do a marvelous job.
His notes were very extensive and he had told his family how it was to end only a few days before. I think together with his wife and Tor they will finish it....... I in fact have no doubt that they will
After he was diagnosed, he made it clear on his weblog that preparations had been made to have the final novel completed by someone else using his extensive notes and outlines in the event he passed away before it could be finished. He had also finished writing significant portions of it. You will most likely get to know how he intended the series to end, though not in 100% his own prose... but that doesn't necessarily mean it will be a poorly-crafted or inauthentic; Tolkien's son and Guy Kay compiled and released the much-lauded The Silmarillion posthumously when in a similar situation.
It is sad to see how the possible loss of book 12 seems more important than the loss of a human being. I read all 11 books and would have loved to read the conclusion but at this time, I just feel for Robert Jordan's family.
When ever I look at the copy of book 11 I am reading it pains to to think that such a great man is gone from the world and how badly his family must feel. He made it very clear how close he was to his wife.
But I can say without doubt , he was truly one of the best authors of his time.
I am very sad to hear about this. The first thought I had when I heard was disbelief. Its hard to imagine someone whose writing meant such a great deal to you would be gone, just like that. At least he has immortality of sorts now, through his words, his books and his characters.
I'm afraid I have to agree with Ingrid, through his blog and his books I felt I got to know a little bit of who the man was, and now I feel as though I've lost someone I admired for both their courage, and their creativity. I couldn't care less if I ever see the 12th book, RJ lost the fight with a terrible disease, and a human being has lost their life, that is what's important, not the book.
The loss of Robert Jordan is enormous for the fans of his work, and for his family and friends. They are in my thoughts and prayers. Still, I have no doubt that he would be enormously pleased that millions of fans are still chomping at the bit to read the conclusion to his epic fantasy series. To my mind, there can be no better testament to his skills as a writer, and his strengths as a human being. Do you think he'd want it any other way?
Hoping to see the end of the series that he spent his life crafting does not dishonor Jordan in the least.
I have read the books and not only have i go to know teh characters of the book but jordan himself.
i think u would all agree that jordan was an amazing man and that he deserved more respect than some people show him.
I will admit when i learned he dies all i thought about was the books but then i thought about him. I think there should be a moment of silence.
I would like to ask someone who is any good at making sites cotact me
omega_knight@hotmail.co.uk so we cna all make a website in robert jordan's memeroy the greatest man who lived the dragon of our age
My condoleances to his close relatives. Whether or not he was a good writer it is a shame to loose someone at such a young age and too such a terrible disease.
A fan until only book 6 but feeling bereft anyway.
You know there are a lot of people who say that they cannot believe that people are grieving over the book not being finished and all rather than the grieving of a human being. In a sense the grieving over the book is what ought to be seen as the more grievous.
Jordan put his whole heart and soul into his fantasy world and the character that give it its sense of adventure and fill it with the flare of life.
Jordan's works of the wheel of time series embodies himself, his passions, his loves, fantasies, and so forth.
Yes fans lost an author that they love, but through his books he has become the potential to becoming immortal, it is by his writing that Jordan has and will become immortalized, just as Tolkien has. The man still lives!, if the last book is not completed then Jordan truly dies, and we must be content with what it is that we know of the Dragon.(a.k.a Robert Jordan)
First and foremost i would like to offer my condolences to the friends and family of Robert Jordan. I can't begin to imagine the impact of his death to those who value him the most.
This news has caused me great sadness, and not to mention frustration. I read about a year ago that Robert Jordan has some sort of illness that has a small chance of being cured. I thought this was some sort of nasty joke and never paid it any mind. I bet you can guess what my reaction was when i saw at yahoo! the news that one of my favorite authors is dead. I wish the comment of Doug is real though. Not that he will be able to finish the book because i feel that it is already finished, but because one of the great fantasy authors, like matrim cauthon was one of the great generals, would not have died.
For those who are insensitive like Whee (what name is that?) i think it would be better if you would just keep your unwelcome thoughts and comments to yourselves. Urusai na!!
Again my condolences to Robert Jordan's friends and family

I think most authors would rather be known by their works, not their selves. The millions of readers who feel a loss for the works--a reflection of our favorite authors-- are doing what we're supposed to be doing. I get that his family feels bad, but we feel bad at the level of our involvement with him, as we should. I love his books, regret his passing, and hope that the voice can be aroused for one more book to finish a stirring story that has become a part of my life.
I too am saddened by his death. My condolences go out to the family. I am however very dissapointed that the series had not been finished. I , like millions of other people have been reading this since 1990. I would not have ever read the series if I had known how long the wait was going to be. I no longer start a series until it is finished.
With that said...
Robert Jordan was a fantastic author (except10) , he will be missed.
I am completely and utterly devestated! I know he was sick or not doing well but to pass on at such an age with unlimited potential not yet shared is unbelievable. Words cannot describe my loss... For the last 13 years since I discovered Robert Jordan in college, I lived, dreamed, and breathed the Wheel of Time. I am so personally involved with his work, even with his other writings. I have met Mr. Jordan and his wife during his tour for Book 8. The picture of us shaking hands have always had a special place on my fireplace. I will forever treasure the infinite hours of imagination, pleasure, and dreams he gave me.
I just wanted to say that I love reading and have never loved an author as i love Robert Jordan. I know that his last book will be finished and i dont think that it is rude to say that i was worried when i found out he died. if any of you read his blogs then you will realize how much he loved his fans.
i also send love to his family and especially his wife Harriet who wrte a beatiful letter on his blog

I was overseas in Iraq when I first discoverd Robert Jordans brilliant series, The Wheel of Time. It comforted me in my time of need, and brought me to not only love reading but become inspired by its majesty. Robert Jordan will never have been my favorite author, but rather, he will always be. If you can truly love a staranger than Robert Jordan will always be loved by millions. Thanks your Robert, The wheel weaves and the wheel wills.
With love to Hariet also.
The series is exceptional, though it was losing its way a bit with more twists and turns being developed than resolved, nevertheless as I think of the excitement of the sword battles, the flowing forms and the discoveries, I am saddend by the tragedy of Robert Jordan's not getting to complete what for him is his life's work.
My condolences to his family, and without sounding crass or heartless as this is not my intention, have you ever considered that the Wheel of Time is the Cycle of Life...as the Wheel turns...we are born and ultimately we die...we all die eventually.
As I too have recently been diagnosed with a rare blood disease and I watch my body gradually shutting down, I think living to 58 is an admirable feat, rather appreciate the life than the death.
My offer condolences to his family and friends, they are in my thoughts and prayers.
An Arthur’s works is the greatest legacy they could ever leave behind, proof to the world that he was here and that he will live on.
For those that do not understand grieving the series along with the man, RJ brought to life characters that millions of people learned to know and love. We have known them for almost two decades, looking forward to hearing about them and catching up with their lives. It is as if Rand, Perrin, Mat, Egwene, Nynaeve, Elayne, Lorial, and all of the other wonderful characters have died as well.
We know and understand what happened to Robert Jordan and as sad as it is, can grieve and have closure. There is no closure for the deaths of the characters that have been a part of our lives for so long.
After a time of grievance for the family, perhaps completing the series will help them feel closer to RJ. He has left behind a gift that will surround them with his love and thoughts. All my heart is with them as they attempt to finalize the series he put his life into.
To lose such talent to this world is a huge loss. One can only hope Jordan knew the joy he brought to it. And as sad as I am to hear the news, it gratifies me so much that so many ppl will remember him. He is not dead, not as long as his writings still exist in our minds and our hearts.
I read his first book half- a year after it was published. It was an impulse buy actually, and after the first chapter I fell in love with his writing. Never have I experienced anything more real. It was obvious that he put his heart and soul into his work. And it was that love he put into it, that brought me to cherish it. Countless times I have read his series always so it was fresh in my mind. And I will continue to read it, and remember the great man that he is. He will be missed.
Wow - I was just googling robert jordan to see if he finished the 12th book yet (i have read the books from number 1 in the early nineties and have reread them so many times that I have literally wore the books out) and found that he died! Also on the day that I had to put my dog down and roughly the same time!!
I loved the series so much that my 3 of my 4 children have names derived from his books - Samara, Branden, Matthew and Jakob (was thinking about Gareth but Jakob won out).
You will be sadly missed and I will look forward to the completion of the series.
Lets face it...All of his fans feel a great loss. All of us worry over book twelve. Not becuase we dont care about R.J., but instead becuase we care about him that much. He was an artist in every sense of the word and this is his greatest work for all those who did not know him personally. This is how we were able to connect to him. He brought us to a world we could hardly hope to imagine, and grounded us in that world as if we were Rand himself...When he died so did the many hopes and dreams in our own hearts and mind die with him. If the book is finished, true we will have our ending, but that will be a far cry from that which we all hoped for. It will seem for most everyone that the sense of closure we all look for will not come through reading his book as it would if he were alive. But what will make it nearly as special will be to finish his masterpiece, to once again relive his world, and thank him in the silence of our own hearts. And that, though incomplete as it is, will be as close as we can come. And that is why we all hope for the final book. Becuase we have already lost so much, it is that we hope we will not lose even more. God Bless you RJ for everything you have given us and rest your soul. Thank you...
Sheez I had just started his series before I went to basic combat training. I had read up to the Dragon Reborn and now that Im out Ive started Shadow Rising. I was so dissapointed when I recieved letters that he had died, I always imagined playing him in pool. I'll admit whenever I think of his death I selfishly think of that 12th book. I was also suprised and felt silly when I found out his real name wasnt Robert Jordan, lol. I couldnt think of a man I respect more than Mr.Jordan.
hi, i have been readin RJ's books 4 a long time and av jus found out about his death. put it simply the man was and is a legend, his books are his legacy.shame about the last one (12) hope it comes out. tru ill mourn the loss of the book and the man himself set any human bein's imagination alight. RIP robert jorden
Im not going to lie. These books have been a big part of my life. Im 17 and have been realing and rereading the sieres for years now. I can tell by te way he wrote that he must have been an amazing person, and so i can safely say that who ever knew him it must have been an honnor to do so and the passing on of such a great person must have been felt very deeply indeed. But he is back in the mothers last embrace. But even with the news of his death filling me with despair i am still profoundly eager to read the twelth book when it come out.
Just found out to today, So sorry for his family and friend's. Its hard to know what to say when you have never meet the person but you know the person. To do this you have to be a good man I think? He lived life to the full.
I first read one of his novel's years ago and that got me hooked. So the least i can do is write a few lines myself to say thanks for all those times he took me away to a diffrent world.
Author Brandon Sanderson has been selected to finish the Wheel of Time series. The last book will be entitled "A MEMORY OF LIGHT" and will be edited by Jordan's own wife; as were all his previous books. Jordan has revealed at length to family members how the story ends. Wife and editor Hariet: “Some scenes were completed by Robert Jordan, and some exist in draft form; he left copious notes and hours of audio recordings.”

i, like all of you, am an adoring fan of Robert Jordan's works.
The Wheel of Time was my escape from reality, reading about a world i could only wish to live in....i lived, breathed, and dreamt The Wheel of Time.
this series influence my whole perspective on life and how it should be lived. some people have religion to turn to for spiritual guidence, for me, The Wheel of Time filled that gap, allowing me to imagine.
i am only 16, but Robert Jordan and his tallent shall stay with me for life.
I just turned a friend on to the first 3 books last month as a birthday gift. She loves to read, but has never tried a fantasy epic. She has turned into a true and welcome fan to this story and has brought me great delight in talking about her insights into what is to her, a new world. I have read these 11 books over and over since the first.
I'm only now finding out about Mr. Jordan's passing and I find it so hard to believe. I feel bad that I never knew about it.
To his family, you have my deepest and sincere condolences.
Robert Jordan will be missed.
I pulled book 1 from my library shelf this morning to begin again.
I just finished the 11th Audiobook this morning, on my way to work.
I found this series while searching for something to listen to since my commute was so long and about to grow longer. After listening to the 1st book I joined an online bookclub and have used all my monthly free selections for this series. I have been living and breathing this story, for months. Only getting 3 to 4 hours of listening in a day. I couldn't wait to have to drive somewhere. I even made sure my new car would connect to my IPod easily. An option I wasn't living without. I kept checking the bookclub and stores to make sure 11 books were the entire series. but saw nothing to tell me otherwise I started listening in small bits to keep the book from finishing. I kept thinking how is this the end there is so much more! I need to know. I am at a loss today. I find out only today Mr. Jordan is no longer with us. My deepest sympathy's to the family. I did read the obit. With all the respect of a fellow military person. (with tears in my eyes) ~I stand at attention and give my finest salute~ 'Fromt he bottom of my heart Thank you for fighting for our country in the worst of times and making it home, and to continue to give by creating the wonderful 'Wheel of Time Series'
I was saddened by The Passing of RJ. I've read all 11 books and was excited about the 12th and last . I think what kept me intrigued was his very extensive style of writing. I will look for the last edition with great expectations, i'm sure that it will be in his style for i believe his spirit will be with his family
I am hoping that someone is allowed to pick up his notes and complete the Wheel of Time series. There is surely enough research material available. When Brian Herbert began researching his father's notes he found enough material for many books. I would like to see the work finished. I think this would be a fitting tribute to Robert Jordan.
I been hooked to the WoT series for a good bit and I was looking on the internet today to see if i could find a release date for the 12th book when to my dismay i find that Robert Jordan the author to this very compeling series has died. I was saddin by this news cause i fell as i come to know RJ through his writings which is a testament to what a great writer he was.It will be bitter sweat when the 12th book is released in the fall 2009 but I look foward to reading and finding out how it all ends. Today was a sad day heres to a better tomarrow. R.I.P RJ
i first discovered his books in the early 1990's and the eye of the world caught my attention...
i have read alot of fantasy in my 38 years of life.
and really in my opinion jordan way one of the best writers of fantasy..
i hv read all of his books in the whell of time series, and i will miss that a great deal knowing that there will be only one more book comming out
sorry to hear of his death i was wondering why another book had not shown up i just wanted to say i will miss him a great deal...
Iam so sorry to hear of Robert Jordans passing,I spent the weekend looking for a release date for book 12 and found out that he had gone.
His books have given me great joy and escape over time.
He will be greatly missed and my deepest heart felt sympathies go out to his family.
To hell with all that. I put half my goddam life into this series. Someone get an effing quiji board or get that jerk off who talks to dead people on TV and find out how it ends. Dammit!!!
I'm sorry for your loss, those of you who knew the man
but seriously, I need an ending. Why couldn't Stephen King have gone instead?
i have been reading robert jordans work for a long time from conan the barbarian stories to the wheel of time he is definitly one of the best authors of all time i will miss him and wish his family all the best.MARTY
Imagine my surprise to find out my favourite author is no more. Although I live way out in Malaysia, Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time is very well known here. I got my first book from the public library in a small town in Perlis. I was immediately hooked and started hunting for the rest of the series diligently. I was trying to find out when the 12th book will be released when i find out that RJ has passed on. The world has really lost a great author. I would like to extend my condolence to his family although it is one year late. RJ is not only known in the western coutries but also is famous in Asean countries specifically in Penang Malaysia.
Like the writer above, I was searching for book 12 when I disovered the sad news. To me, the key to Robert's writing is not the quality of the prose but, like Tolkien, the richness of the imagination and the development of the characters. By the end of book 11, I felt that I knew them and they were so likeable (Matt in particular). Hats of to a true giant of storytelling!!! Tony, UK.
if what i gathered from reading all of your comments is true than i cant wait for the 12th book to be published, i just finished the first book, and my friend told me about his health problem but didnt know if he actually was dead. i have to say that after reading Goodkinds Sword of Truth, and now reading the WOT series that RJ is a supurb author, i just wish i knew about him a lot earlier, no matter great works never die.
im really sad to hear about this, he was a great writer, and im sorry for his family's loss, he will be greatly missed upon this world.
I just rememberd the great author today i.e. 2nd October 2008, and felt that we lost a great author as we lost a great father of nation in india who was born on this day. I hope the person who is given the oppurtunity to finish the 12th book will do justice as Mr. Jordan does to all his books . I am a geat fan of his. May his soul rest in peace.
