Last night, the second season of The X Factor premiered to disappointing ratings. There was hope Britney Spears and Demi Lovato would attract enough young eyeballs to trounce The Voice and establish itself as the ratings force many initially expected it to be. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. In fact, The Voice actually narrowly won the head-to-head match-up.

With an average of almost ten million viewers, The X Factor did well enough to win the overall two-hour primetime night. Hell, if it can even maintain that figure, it will likely be renewed for another season, but there’s a difference between being a nice show a fair amount of people watch and being the type of cultural currency American Idol was able to achieve for a three or four year stretch. Clearly, Simon Cowell would prefer the latter, but thus far, the show has never been able to become more than the former.

There are some out there who vigorously defend The X Factor and are convinced if people would just give it a chance, they’d be hooked. There are others out there who think no singing competition will ever be as popular as Idol once was. What do you think? Will The X Factor ever be a big deal, or will it continue to be marginally popular for its entire run? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
