[REC] 2 Infects DVD This Summer
The horror genre has been wearing out the whole "found footage" concept ever since The Blair Witch Project became an unlikely hit back in 1999. If done right, the contained, almost claustrophobic nature of a single camera lens can be an extremely effective way to build mood and suspense...or it can just be a cheap gimmick. The 2007 horror flick [REC] tended toward the successful end of that spectrum, while the American remake (redubbed Quarantine) settled at the forgettable end. If you were a fan of the Spanish original, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is bringing you more of the least hospitable apartment ever this summer. [REC] 2 hits DVD on July 12th.
[REC 2] picks up a mere 15 minutes after the end of the original film. I hope you weren't growing tired of the inside of that apartment building, because the sequel heads right back "into the quarantined apartment building where a terrifying virus runs rampant. What they find inside lies beyond the scope of medical science -- a demonic nightmare more terrifying than they could possibly imagine." So I'm guessing it's not just a really nasty black mold infection.
[REC] writer/directors Jaume Balaguerö and Paco Plaza are both returning for the sequel. That's good news for fans tired of horror sequels that get churned out without any of the original talent involved. The release will also include several bonus features, including deleted and extended scenes, behind-the-scenes featurettes, a set walkthrough, a press conference from the Sitges Film Festival, and a "[REC] 2 on Tour" segment.
