Creator Chris Carter has been adamant in almost all the press surrounding this year’s X-Files sequel that the new movie will be accessible to all audiences and not mired down in decades of mythology. It’s one of the few things that have been consistent when the new movie is mentioned, and one of the only things we know about the sequel.
So, if the new movie doesn’t require a working knowledge of all things X-Files, why is Fox celebrating its release with a new DVD release, titled The X-Files: Revelations? The DVD set, coming to stores on July 8th, features eight episodes, handpicked by Carter himself, who introduces each episode along with Executive Producer Frank Potnitz, explaining why these eight episodes were selected.
What’s interesting to me is that, while I’ve only seen a handful of X-Files episodes, one of my favorites is in this set, which means its one of Carter’s favorites. “Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose” was a great episode featuring an Emmy award winning performance from Peter Boyle, who plays a curmudgeonly psychic in the episode. Other episodes in the set include the pilot episode, “Beyond the Sea,” “The Host,” Memento Mori,” Post-Modern Prometheus,” “Bad Blood,” and “Milagro” for those of you who recognize the episodes by title.
Since the DVD has to relate to the movie in some way, the two-disc set will include a teaser trailer for the theatrical release as well as a movie cash ticket, so theoretically by buying this DVD set you’re paying for your entry for the X-Files sequel. The set also includes footage from the recent WonderCon panel session with series stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.
Pick up The X-Files: Revelations on DVD July 8th, out in time for the theatrical release of the sequel on July 25th.
