Disney’s strategy with the Tron: Legacy release was to bury the original Tron as far away from public consciousness as it possibly could in order to keep people from making comparisons between the original and the new film. Fans of Captain America will be pleased to hear Disney is taking the opposite approach with the upcoming Captain America release. Marvel must have had to do a lot of sweet-talking to get Disney to agree to release the 1990 live-action Captain America film directed Albert Pyun. According to io9, the director’s cut of Pyun’s Captain America will hit Blu-Ray sometime in May, just a couple of months before the Chris Evans vehicle hits theaters.
The fact that the film will appear as a director’s cut bodes well for everyone involved. Back in the day, Pyun’s film was supposed to have a decently large budget until some shenanigans went down and the budget was slashed. This led to a film that didn’t match up to people’s hopes at the time, and which has since been washed from nearly any cultural memory. Other than the fact that J.D. Salinger’s son, Matt Salinger, was involved, which should come in handy if you’re ever playing a movie-trivia game.
Stay with me on this trivia thing: apparently Pyun’s been revamping and reediting other films in his collection, including Cyborg and his next project, Ticker. Each of the films contain noticeable differences from the original. In Captain America’s case, this will include a lengthier film, an entirely new soundtrack, and less action. All this B-movie nonsense will be harder to work into conversation, but it’s something to toss out as we wait for this release.
