Wrestling is fake. John Cena has been wrestling for about nine years. Did anyone think making the switch from the ring to the big screen would make his performances anymore realistic? 12 Rounds may not be the most believable film, but it’s not meant to be. Check out Cena do the impossible when 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment releases 12 Rounds on DVD and Blu-ray.
Cena plays a guy who must save his wife who’s been kidnapped. No, I’m not talking about The Marine, even though that one-sentence description could suit it; I’m referring to 12 Rounds. Rather than being an ex-marine, Cena’s character is a police officer and rather than his wife being kidnapped by diamond thieves, she’s taken by an ex-con holding a grudge. There may be zero originality in the plot, but do Cena fans even want it? When someone watches an action movie with a WWE superstar playing the main character, they’re expecting to see a hardcore thriller and in that sense, Cena delivers.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Cena or are seeing this film for the first time, you may be better off saving some cash and buying the standard DVD for $29.98. It may be the lesser of the two buying options, but you still get the “Extreme Cut” of the film, commentary by director Renny Harlin, writer Daniel Kunka and John Cena, two alternate ending, “Crash Course: John Cena Stunts” and “Never-before-seen Cena gag reel.” If that’s not enough, you can drop some extra bucks and pay $39.99 for the Blu-ray version, which also includes “Streetcar Crossing: Film with Caution,” “12 Bonus Rounds: Making Magic Behind-the-Scenes,” “Keeping Score: The Music of 12 Rounds,” “Round and Round with Director Renny Harlin and John Cena,” viral videos and BD live bootstrap. As usual, they had me at gag reel.
