Nobody can say no to an animated comedy, even if it did not come from Pixar. Thanks to MGM Home Entertainment you can bring home Igor on DVD and Blu-ray January 20th.
Igor (John Cusack), the assistant to a mad scientist (John Cleese), is determined to create an invention of his own. Sure enough, Igor brings a Frankenstein-like monster to life but his monster, Eva (Molly Shannon), is lovable and enjoys singing show tunes. The story takes a turn for the worst when the evil Dr. Schadenfreude (Eddie Izzard) gets a hold of Eva. Now Igor must gather his courage in order to save his beloved creation.
I’m quite the sucker for a fun loving animated film, but what draws me closer to picking up this film is the star-studded cast. On top of Cusack, Cleese, Shannon and Izzard, Igor also boasts the voices of Jennifer Coolidge, Steve Buscemi, Sean Hayes and Jay Leno. On second thought, producers should have axed the animation concept and had these big names act out the roles themselves. That also could have been a fun idea for some bonus material. Unfortunately, that’s not an option. But at least the DVD will bring you deleted scenes, bloopers, and the “Be An Igor” featurette. If you pick up the Blu-ray version you’ll also get an alternate opening scene and commentary by the film’s director, writer and producer.
Even though nobody considered my creative genius before sending this film to DVD, I’m still rather excited to get a copy. The fact that a movie can grant a person a short escape from everyday life is an amazing concept. Animated features, in particular, have an unbelievable power to send the viewer into a world created solely by imagination. For $17.99 for the DVD version or $39.99 for the Blu-ray one, Igor sound like a worthy way to put a smile on my face after a long week of work.
