Last week we ran a news story about an odd hint from Joe Carnahan regarding his upcoming movie. The writer/director placed an image of Marvel’s villain (recently turned hero) the Juggernaut on his blog, which was interpreted to mean Carnahan was either planning on working with Vinnie Jones (who played the character in the third X-Men movie) or was preparing to work on a Juggernaut movie. New evidence indicates the latter might be true.
JoBlo is reporting some interesting speculation about the future of the X-Men franchise. With the upcoming prequels focused on Wolverine and Magneto having been redubbed “X-Men Origins” (as in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and X-Men Origins: Magneto, there is a possibility that Fox will expand the “Origins” line to include some direct-to-DVD films (although Wolvie and Magneto’s pictures should stay theatrical). With Carnahan already working in the direct-to-DVD realm (with a prequel to Smoking Aces), it makes sense the director would be approached about other direct-to-DVD movies.
The idea is fascinating, although a tad bit worrisome. On one hand, using a direct-to-DVD venue opens up a lot of the myriad of characters the X-Men movies contained for possible expansion. Even minor characters like Colossus or Shadowcat who played a pivotal part in the franchise could get a shot at their own movie. At the same time, Fox hasn’t been concerned with taking liberties with characters in the past, so how many of these flawed heroes might get Hollywoodized stories in order to increase the potential DVD sales?
Of course, all of this is speculation at this point. With the right people heading up pictures, there wouldn’t be as much reason to worry. Let’s have more Carnahan and less Brett Ratner and see if we can’t get some kick-ass movies made.
