Nick Twisp has it rough, and I mean really rough. Whereas growing up is a nightmare for most awkward teens, Nick suffers from the worst of the worst. Soon you can revel in his hilarious misfortunes as many times as you’d like, because Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release Youth in Revolt on DVD and Blu-ray June 15th.
Based on the book by C.D. Payne, Youth in Revolt follows the mishaps caused by Nick Twisp, a temperamental teen living with his mother (Jean Smart) and her unappealing boyfriend, Jerry (Zach Galifianakis). He’s able to keep his angst in check until a family trip exposes him to the finer things in life, namely the beautiful Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday). From that point on, Nick’s top priority is to be with Sheeni, no matter what it takes. With a little newfound confidence courtesy of his alter ego Francois Dillinger, Nick goes to extremes to ensure that he and Sheeni can live happily ever after. Youth in Revolt is a coming-of-age comedy starring Michael Cera. There’s no way not to know what you’re getting yourself into by seeing this film, but I don’t mean that in a bad way. In fact, this is one of Cera’s best nerdy-guy-with-lady-issues performances yet. Sadly, there’s no way to squeeze all 498 pages of Payne’s book into this film, but writer Gustin Nash picks and chooses appropriately, satiating longtime fans yet giving newcomers an adequate depiction of this complicated character. Of course, I’d recommend picking up the book after seeing the film, but both the DVD and Blu-ray will come with a handful of special features that might distract you from that venture. For $28.95 you can get the DVD version, which comes with deleted scenes, “Off the Chain Deleted and Extended Animated Sequences,” audition footage and commentary with director Miguel Arteta and Cera. Dropping $34.95 will get you the BD edition and tack on the usual, BD-Live access. |
