With all the bad DVD news we’ve had this week, it’s nice to hear something good. Remember the crazy direct-to-DVD Jaws sequel we told you about here? Well never fear, Kevin Smith is on the case.

It seems the director and ViewAskew head honcho was as disturbed by this rumor as we were, and so he set out to use his contacts to find out if there was any truth to it. The answer? Nope. Kevin recently posted this on his message board: “Allow me to debunk. I dropped an email to David Linde to ask if this was true, and he said folks are confused: there's an HD "Jaws" DVD on its way, but no "Jaws 5" straight-to-DVD. And if you can't believe Universal's top brass, who can you believe?”

Well you can’t always believe the top brass, sometimes they fudge things to get good publicity. But I doubt they’d play games like that with Smith. It may well be that at some point they had such a cash-in project in production, which would explain the original scoop picked up by the guys over at FilmRot. Some have suggested that the hard working FR guys made the whole thing up, but it’s more likely that their information was simply out of date. So take a deep breath and relax Jaws fans, the franchise is safe… at least until someone comes up with Jaws 4-D.
