We’ve seen “Best of” collections on just about every marketable cast member of “Saturday Night Live.” Now it’s time to do the show right. NBC Universal is finally beginning to release “SNL” like other television shows – season by season and starting December 5th you can get season one.

The eight disc DVD set includes the original 24 episodes of Saturday Night Live which first aired in 1975, back when it actually featured the “not ready for prime-time players,” including John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, Gilda Radner, Laraine Newman and Garrett Morris in classic sketches like the Land Shark and the Killer Bees. As we know, it’s not just the cast members who make the show. There are also the guest hosts and musical stars too. Highlights of the first season include Richard Pryor, Rob Reiner, Candice Bergen, George Carlin, Simon & Garfunkel, and Carly Simon.

The studio is going a little farther than just putting these episodes out on DVD. The individual episodes will also be available for download, presumably via iTunes.

Obviously with shows like “30 Rock” and “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” interest in SNL is at an all time high. Relive the shows origins, back when it was really funny on DVD, December 5th.
