If you buy just one DVD over the next few months, I recommend Moon. Yes, that’s saying a lot, but I’m certain that anyone who purchases Moon when it hits DVD and Blu-ray on January 12th, 2010 will be greatly appreciative of my urgency. Moon is unlike any sci-fi astronaut film you’ve seen before. The crews of the Independence and Freedom in Armageddon have got nothing on Sam Bell.

Astronaut Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) is just about to wrap up his three-year contract on the moon harvesting Helium 3, the substance Lunar Industries guarantees will solve Earth's energy crisis. Except for viewing infrequent video messages from his wife and company executives, Sam’s only contact is with GERTY (voiced by Kevin Spacey), the base's watchful computer system. It's no blast, but Sam does his job diligently and eagerly awaits his return to Earth. With just two weeks to go, Sam starts to feel strange...and not just I’ve-been-alone-on-the-moon-for-three-years strange. He’s hearing things, seeing strange visions, and soon suffers a terrible accident during a routine Helium 3 extraction, leaving him questioning not only Lunar Industries’ operation but his very existence.

There’s no better way to kick off the New Year than with Moon on DVD or Blu-ray. The film is extraordinarily absorbing and innovative, and you’ll be eager to delve further into experience beyond the film’s conclusion. Luckily for you, both the DVD and Blu-ray come with a nice selection of bonus materials. There are two audio commentary tracks, one with writer/director Duncan Jones, director of photography Gary Shaw, concept designer Gavin Rothery and production designer Tony Noble, and the second with Jones and producer Stuart Fenegen. Then, there are four featurettes:
  • “The Making of MOON”
  • Creating the Visual Effects -- A Visual Effects Making-of piece that includes: “CG Tour of the Moon Base,” “Cloning Sam,” and “The Rovers”
  • Science Center Q&A with Director Duncan Jones
  • Filmmaker's Q&A at the Sundance Film Festival
Come New Year’s, your resolution better be to drop $27.96 on the DVD or $37.95 on the Blu-ray and get a copy of Moon.
