New Star Trek Releases Part I: Classic Movies Invade Blu-rayAuthor: Rafe Telsch

The new Star Trek movie is on the horizon, replacing all of the classic actors with new, younger faces in the familiar roles that started Star Trek on its long path so many years ago. But Paramount isn’t completely turning their backs on the classic cast members. Instead, it’s taking advantage of the new Star Trek boom by releasing the first six movies on Blu-ray on May 12th.
Although some of these classic Trek films are inferior to a few of the Next Generation movies, the reason behind releasing the first six films is obvious - these are the movies with Kirk, Spock, and company in them - the same characters that will appear in the new Star Trek film. I have to admit, I never picked all of these up on DVD, so the chance to get them in a single set on Blu-ray is pretty appealing. It helps that the discs are fully loaded. Of course, a lot of the content is made up of material we’ve seen before, but a lot of it has been converted to high def. You also get a new commentary track on most of the movies, and the set includes a bonus disc with “The Captain’s Summit,” a roundtable discussion about life on Trek from the captains and first officers of Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation. Take a look at the announced details for the “Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection” on Blu-ray below. This isn’t the only new Star Trek releases we’ll be getting in celebration of the new movie though; be sure to check out details on other releases here and here.
