It’s common for highly acclaimed movies to bypass the public eye in theaters. Far too often little films get screened for critics, but studios don’t want to take a risk with a big release. Enter DVD – the mighty format that levels the ground and lets everyone experience the good and the bad of the small picture world. While it’s likely you may not have heard much about Red Doors, which hits DVD on January 30th, now you’ll get a chance to see it.

From the official press release, here’s the plot synopsis:

From acclaimed director Georgia Lee (Educated, Diagnosis) comes this funny and tender tale about a first generation Chinese family in America and their struggle to cope with life, love and dysfunction. As retired patriarch Ed Wong begins to plot his suicide, the ever-changing lives of his three daughters unknowingly get in the way. When Ed eventually moves into a Monastery, the family must re-examine their values and lifestyles or they’ll crumble. Red Doors is a passionate and charming comedy staring Tzi Ma (The Ladykillers, The Quiet American) and Jacqueline Kim (Brokedown Palace, Volcano).

Interestingly, Red Doors appears to originally have been available via Amazon for electronic download. I don’t know whether that was successful or not, but the film comes out on DVD this Tuesday.
