One of the biggest surprises I’ve encountered from Sean Combs hasn’t been his insistence to repeatedly change his nickname. Instead it’s the idea that he can act – and apparently act well. His stint on Broadway in A Raisin in the Sun as Walter Lee Younger drew quite a bit of attention and eventually led to a television adaptation which aired this week.
Of course, an aired telefilm means the DVD can’t be too far behind, and Sony Pictures has announced a May 6 release date for A Raisin in the Sun, starring Combs as well as Phylicia Rashad, Sanaa Lathan, Audra McDonald, and John Stamos.
The DVD isn’t heavily loaded, with only a director’s commentary from Kenny Leon, and a featuette titled “Dreams Worthwhile: The Journey of A Raisin in the Sun.” Personally I’m hoping there’s some footage of the stage play included in that featurette, as I’d like to see how Combs handled the stage compared to the movie version.
We’ll post artwork as we get it, but look for A Raisin in the Sun on May 6th.
