Shameless: Princess Bride Gets Double DippedAuthor: Rafe Telsch

I never thought I would complain about The Princess Bride. After all, the movie has everything: Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles... but I digress. There’s actually something to complain about as far as The Princess Bride goes now. MGM has announced a 20th Anniversary DVD Edition heading into stores on November 13th with new featurettes and a brand new DVD video game.
So what’s to complain about? Well, how about the fact that MGM just put out a new edition of The Princess Bride last year. Two editions, technically, with his/hers packing as they released “The Dread Pirate Edition” and “The Buttercup Edition” of the DVD. With multiple editions coming out within two calendar years, this is blatant double-dipping on the part of the studio. Fans of the beloved movie deserve better. If you didn’t fall for the editions that came out last year, this 20th Anniversary edition does have some new content that might be of interest, although I have to say I don’t care much for the new logo that has been created for the packaging. The big boast of the press release is the new DVD video game which “leaves behind the simple text-based, slideshow nature of most DVD games, and transforms the film’s favorite live action actors into fully animated characters in a graphic novel type setting.” The game takes place after Buttercup has been kidnapped by Vizzini, Inigo, and Fezzik and has the player complete activities for gems. It’s not completely clear how it ties in, but there is also a downloadable version of the game that will let you access new content, activities, and gems. Of course, the DVD game isn’t the only new thing being added to the disc. There are also new featurettes looking at “the untold tales,” “the art of fencing,” and “fairytales and folklore.” I don’t want anyone to think that I don’t absolutely love The Princess Bride, but I do think it’s kind of a sham to release two editions of a movie within two years. Fans deserve better than this and the game and new content had better be darn good to encourage anyone to purchase another copy of the movie that is already a must-own for any self-respecting movie fan. |
