Sharing Is Caring, But Not In The Edge Of Love

By Perri Nemiroff: 2009-06-12 10:05:36
Sharing Is Caring, But Not In The Edge Of Love Keira Knightley in a period piece? Surprise, surprise. At least The Edge of Love has Sienna Miller, Cillian Murphy and Matthew Rhys to spice up the film a bit. If you’d like to see love ravage these stars, you can pick up the film when it hits stores on July 14th.

The film is loosely based on an actual love triangle between poet Dylan Thomas (Rhys), his wife (Miller) and first love, Vera (Knightley). The two women wind up becoming friends and all three enjoy spending time together. You’d think when Vera marries a solider (Cillian Murphy) it would have a healthy effect on Thomas’ marriage, but it only frustrates the poet, which his wife ends up noticing becoming aggravated herself.

Hasn’t anyone every told these people that jealousy is a green-eyed monster? (I can’t believe I just referenced Shakespeare.) Not only is the love triangle scenario played out in films in general, but it’s completely overused in The Edge of Love. The role of angriest character is volleyed around so many times you’re dying for the clichéd lets-make-up-and-be-friends happy ending. The film might have worked if it focused more heavily on Dylan Thomas. Knowing more about Thomas’ background and career as a poet could have made the character more engaging resulting in actual concern for the well-being of his love life.

If you decide to spend the $27.98 for the DVD or the $35.98 for the BD, it won’t be for movie but for the actors and their talent on a personal level.
