Simon Pegg does not want you to see him on DVD. His last movie How to Lose Friends and Alienate People his shelves here in America in February, and on his official blog Pegg pleads with fans to boycott it.

It seems Pegg and his director Robert Weide went to great pains in putting together an extensive selection of extra features for the DVD release of the film, features which the studio has decided to dump in the trash in favor of releasing a bare-bones, minimum effort version of the film. According to Pegg, included among the things you won’t see on DVD were “never before seen DVD extras such as the Homage-o-meter, the Plot Holes comic strips and the trivia track.” Their goal was “to make the finished product indispensable.” Now even he thinks its not worth your time.

Weide also speaks out on this DVD debacle saying, “Simon and I worked very hard to make sure the DVD would be packed with bonus material. The British distributors (Paramount) solicited our input and included all of the extras. Sadly, the American distributors (MGM/Fox) locked us out of the process and managed to leave off most of the bonus material.” The UK, Region 2 version of the disc will be loaded with great stuff, and it’s that which Pegg and Weide recommend their fans buy. Sadly that’s not an option for those of us in Region 1.

It’s easy to see both sides of this dilemma. On the one hand I can understand Pegg and Weide being upset at putting so much work into something, only to have it dropped in a dumpster. On the other hand, this is How to Lose Friends and Alienate People we’re talking about here. The movie was a flop here in America, there’s almost certainly very little interest in the DVD as it is, and for Paramount it’s probably not worth the money for them to put that much effort into a DVD which no one is really all that hot to buy anyway. Boycotting this release should be easy, since odds are no one was going to buy it anyway.
