At long last, Star Wars is coming to Blu-ray. All of it. All at once. The news was announced by George Lucas at Celebration V today where he promised all six Star Wars movies will show up in one, Blu-ray box set in Fall of 2011. Yep, you’ve got awhile to wait.
What you likely really want to know is which version of the original Star Wars trilogy we’re getting. Will Han shoot first? Lucas isn’t saying but fans in attendance at Celebration were treated to some of the bonus material to be included. Seen was a long-lost deleted scene from Return of the Jedi in which Luke Skywalker builds his own lightsaber before entering Jabba’s palace to rescue Han Solo. He then stashes it in R2’s dome, and in the original version of the film the lightsaber isn’t seen on screen until R2D2 ejects it. UPDATE! The lost footage of Luke's lightsaber construction has made it's way online. Here it is: UPDATE 2 The deleted scene may not even be real, but rather a scene Lucas is faking and passing off as deleted scenes in order to sell DVDs. Details here. In addition to all six films in the best possible high-def format and must-see deleted footage the Star Wars Blu-ray box set will include documentaries, vintage behind-the-scenes moments, interviews, and retrospectives. ![]() George Lucas and Mark Hamill announce the release of Star Wars on Blu-Ray at Celebration V. |
