The Remastered Third Season of Trek Will Include An Alternate Cut Of The PilotAuthor: David Wharton

Let's be frank: the third season of Star Trek: The Original Series is not exactly the finest hour for the men and women of the U.S.S. Enterprise. This is the season that gave us "Spock's Brain," after all, arguably Kirk and company's most embarrassing mission ever (at least until Star Trek 5 came along). Still, there are plenty of memorable moments: the introduction of the Tholians in "The Tholian Web; the iconic if unsubtle racist allegory of "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield"; even the bizarre minimalist Western of "Spectre of the Gun." You can complete your Blu-ray original Trek collection on December 15th, and as with the two previous sets, the episodes have been remastered and spiffed up with redone special effects. Who knows, maybe all that work made "Spock's Brain" less ridiculous. But probably not.
The Blu-ray set lists for a hefty $129.99, although any smart shopper will be able to find a copy for a lot cheaper, and it includes the usual array of special features. One of particular interest is an unaired, alternate version of the pilot episode, "Where No Man Has Gone Before." According to CBS/Paramount, the rare print was found in the collection of a German film collector and will be released for the first time in this set. You can look forward to an alternate version of Kirk's infamous opening monologue, different music, and some different action sequences. Blu-Ray Special Features
