There’s got to be a reason Stargate SG-1 nabbed 12 Leo Awards, six Saturn Awards and two Gemini Awards. Even if you haven’t been following the show since its 1997 Showtime debut, this disc could be for you. On July 21st MGM Home Entertainment will release Stargate SG-1: Children of the Gods on DVD. If you’d like to jump through a gateway of adventure this disc could kick off that spectacular journey.
The show’s pilot episode, Children of the Gods, picks up one year after the movie Stargate left off. Jack O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) is recalled to duty and assigned to return to Abydos to investigate a group of potentially hostile aliens. O’Neill is given command of SG-1 and required to use the Stargate to find potential threats to Earth. The show was originally aired in two parts, but this DVD combines both as a re-mastered, re-cut and re-imagined feature-length pilot. Hardcore fans won’t find much of a point in purchasing this disc, but it’s the perfect item for someone who’s first getting into the series. It’s like a preview; just with enough content to let you decided whether or not it’s worth dropping the big bucks for the full season sets. For $26.98 you’ll get the pilot episode as well as commentary from co-writer and executive producers Brad Wright and Richard Dean Anderson and a featurette called “Back to the Beginning.” |
