It pains me to think that there's an entire generation who only knows Eddie Murphy as the voice of Donkey from Shrek and from a parade of horrible, horrible family comedies, many involving fat suits. I keep hoping that someday, the Eddie Murphy of the '80s will kick down the door of an awards show, pop a cap in the head of the modern incarnation, and inform us all that he was abducted, placed in suspended animation, and replaced by an alien doppelganger sometime in the early 1990s. If this were to happen right around the time they get around to making Beverly Hills Cop IV, so much the better.

But until that glorious day, we'll just have to make do by revisiting his caustic stand up, and by enjoying the recent wave of high-def '80s nostalgia. His classic pairing with Nick Nolte hit Blu-ray last month, and you can read Ed's review of the Blu release of 48 Hours right here. Beverly Hills Cop follows suit later this spring, giving us all an excuse to revisit Murphy's most iconic non-donkey role. Even better, the disc isn't just a bare-bones catalogue release.
