Darren Aronofsky’s biggest box-office film to date, Black Swan is coming to Blu-ray and DVD on March 29th. This is a late announcement for such a close release, but perhaps Fox Home Entertainment was biding its time to see how many Oscar wins they could put on the DVD box.
While Natalie Portman’s win for Best Actress is the only Oscar blurb Black Swan can claim, the film has been highly acclaimed by different crowds of critics. “Stunning” and “flawless” are two adjectives I’ve heard used repeatedly, and while I can’t agree with the latter, I will certainly agree with the former. If you haven’t yet seen it, Black Swan is worth your time, even if you have to shell out a nice chunk of change for it.
Neither the Blu-Ray ($39.99) nor the DVD ($29.98) are the cheapest I’ve ever seen; however, this seems to be a case where springing for the Blu-Ray copy won't give you a ton more than the DVD. The real meat of the special features, a three-part documentary that will look at Aronofsky’s directing, the acting, and the special effects, will be included with both versions.
The Blu-Ray will have some extras not included with the DVD release, though. The first is an interview segment between Aronofsky and Portman. Next, the Blu-Ray will include cast profiles, presented by Fox Movie Channel. The last Blu-ray exclusive is a featurette called “Behind the Curtain,” discussing costume and production design.
Regardless of how it was designed to look, Black Swan would be a psychological and challenging film. Luckily for us, it is better than just this, falling also into the realms of entertaining and beautiful. And sexy; there’s that, too.
