Following the release of the John Wayne classic in December, Paramount Home Entertainment has announced the Coen Brothers' 2010 box office success, True Grit, for Blu-Ray and DVD release on June 7th. Striking comparisons have been made between the original film and the new, although the Coen Brothers contend their adaptation was based solely on the novel by Clinton Portis.
They must have done something right, because the Coen Brothers' True Grit was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including a Best Supporting Actress nomination for first-time movie star Hailee Steinfeld. Supporting Ms. Steinfeld was an all-star cast, including Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and Barry Pepper. If you haven’t seen the film, it’s well worth your time, although maybe to a lesser extent if you hold the first movie dear to your heart.
To entice you to buy the Blu-Ray or DVD of the 2010 True Grit, Paramount is supplying a lot of extras. The single-disc DVD set will come with the “Hailee's True Grit” feature, as well as a segment on costuming for the 1880s. It will also include a segment on the cast and one on the “re-creation” of Fort Smith. The Blu-Ray set will include a DVD copy and its contents, as well as a few features of its own. There will be an homage feature called “Clinton Portis -- The Greatest Writer You Never Heard Of…,” a cinematography featurette, and a theatrical trailer exclusive to Blu-Ray copies.
This True Grit may not be the role that gave John Wayne critical acclaim, but it is the role that made Hailee Steinfeld famous, and I’m not horsing around when I say the film is worth your time.
