Midnight Run is one of the great underappreciated movies of the '80s. George Gallo's script was witty, and Charles Grodin and Robert De Niro had great antagonistic chemistry as an accountant on the run and the bounty hunter tasked with bringing him in, respectively. It's a natural spin on the time-honored road-trip movie, and my surprise that nobody has announced a remake yet is only overwhelmed by my befuddlement that they're planning a Grodin-free sequel instead.
One of the latest flicks hoping to recapture that Midnight Run magic was the unimaginatively titled Gerard Butler/Jennifer Aniston outing, The Bounty Hunter. Butler takes on the De Niro role as, well, a bounty hunter tasked with recapturing his bail-jumping ex-wife, Nicole (Aniston). Naturally, their former relationship adds a whole other level of tension to the comedy, but as with Midnight Run, the pair soon realize they've got bigger problems to worry about, namely the people who want to kill Nicole. Did it recapture the magic of its '80s predecessor? Well...we'll let Mack Rawden deliver the bad news. If you're looking for a mid-July gift for the Butler or Aniston fan in your life, The Bounty Hunter is being brought in on Blu-ray and DVD July 13th. The BD will include a digital copy and BD-Live functionality, and both versions will include three bonus featurettes: "Making of The Bounty Hunter," "Stops Along the Road: Hunting Locations," and "Rules for Outwitting a Bounty Hunter." |
