I’ve been stymied by every press announcement we’ve gotten for the James Bond movies being released on Blu-ray. That doesn’t change with the announcement of the third wave of Bond movies. The first wave was a bunch of the mediocre flicks. The second wave (which hit stores this week) was slightly smaller, but finally brought Goldfinger to Blu-ray. Now the third wave gets even smaller, with only two titles being released on May 12th.
The third wave brings one of Roger Moore’s more entertaining movies, The Man with the Golden Gun to Blu-ray, as well as the first high definition transfer of one of the movies from Timothy Dalton’s short Bond stint, License to Kill. Like before, the contents of the discs look like what we’ve gotten before on the special edition DVDs, only brought to Blu-ray. Still, if you’ve picked up the other nine pictures on Blu-ray, it’s not like you’ll want to pass these two by.
I can’t figure out MGM’s release strategy with the Bond movies, but I guess we should just be happy they are continuing to roll them out. Sure, it’s a slow process, made even slower by the reduction in the number of titles in each wave, but the movies do look darn impressive in high definition.
