With Liam Neeson and Christina Ricci in the cast, you'd think After.Life would have made more of an impression. Given the reviews, however, maybe there's a reason it was dead on arrival. The negative buzz is a shame, since both the premise and the cast had the makings of a decent rental, at least.

Ricci stars as Anna, a young woman who is in a terrible car accident, and thereafter awakens in a morgue with a mysterious funeral director attending to her. Since she still feels very much alive, Anna is rather shocked with Eliot Deacon (Neeson) tells her that she has shuffled off her mortal coil and is due to be buried in three days. Deacon has the knack to talk to dead folks, ya see, and he's there to help her accept the inevitable. As Anna struggles to come to grips with her death, her still-living boyfriend (Justin Long) is having his own dealings with Deacon, and beginning to suspect that the funeral director is up to no good. Is Anna really dead? Is Deacon just playing sick games with the intention of burying her alive? Why is there a period in the middle of this movie's title? All these questions will be addressed when After.Life hits Blu-ray and DVD August 3rd.

Little-seen or poorly reviewed flicks often arrive on home video with bare bones, so props to Anchor Bay for including a making-of featurette and a commentary with co-writer/director Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo. It remains to be seen whether you'll want to know more about After.Life after you sit through it, but it's nice to have options.
