If you’ve already caught Shutter Island and just can’t wait until Inception hits theaters July 16th, why not get your Leo fix by throwing it back to 1995? The Basketball Diaries is scheduled to make its Blu-ray debut on April 20th.
The Basketball Diaries is based on Jim Carroll’s autobiography of the same title. It stars Leonard DiCaprio as Jim, a member of the hottest high school basketball team in town. His bright future dims when his coach catches Jim and his teammates using drugs and kicks them off the team. From then on, Jim is consumed by drugs and crime, and is even kicked out of his house by his own mother (Lorraine Bracco). Longtime fans of this one will be pleased. For just $24.99 you’ll get the film in glorious Blu-ray hi-def, a Jim Carroll interview and poetry reading, as well as interviews with the cast and director Scott Kalvert. It’s no surprise that DiCaprio is at his best and well deserving of your hard-earned cash. I’d still say What’s Eating Gilbert Grape is the best of his early films, but The Basketball Diaries isn’t far behind. |
