I am still somewhat mystified by The Hangover's incredible success. While certainly a more-than-enjoyable film, it garnered an extraordinary amount of buzz considering its three leads were relatively unknown (by comparison, Todd Phillips' Old School starred two well-established actors, as well as a well-liked SNL cast member). All that aside, the film set a record as the highest grossing R-rated comedy of all time, earning $277 million in its domestic run. Following its release on December 15th, however, it has shown that it is not done setting the high bar.

Variety is reporting that with 8.6 million units (including both DVDs and Blu-ray) already sold, and 9.5 million units estimated to be sold by July, The Hangover has set the record for all-time best-selling comedy, outpacing the previous record holder, My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

The Hangover breaking the record is all well and good, but seriously, what the hell was My Big Fat Greek Wedding doing holding the record for seven years? Obviously there is a calculated risk when buying a comedy on DVD, as overexposure can exhaust the jokes, but really? Considering that I've never actually met anyone who owns that film, I am forced to come to one conclusion: Nia Vardalos owns every single copy and watches them repeatedly instead of making a new movie that's even remotely watchable.
