The Film Habit #12 - July 15, 2004

The Film HabitHave you ever had one of those weeks when you just can’t get any sleep? First it was late nights working, then it was an unruly dog, then it was just plain stupidity on my part, getting caught up in my latest book acquisition, The Wolves of Calla.

Whatever the reason, sleep is something I haven’t really had this week but need. Last night I vaguely remember babbling incomprehensibly to Bill and Matt in the CB Chat Room, but have no idea what embarrassing things I might have said. Note to self: Entering the chat room when fatigued is even more dangerous than doing so drunk. Drunk chatting is fun, sleep chatting is just plain dumb.

Footloose Frog

Well someone has finally cleaned house on Superman. All indications are that the horror is over, at least for now. McG has been tossed out of Warner Brothers on his ass and J.J. Abrams frighteningly bad script (which featured among other things, Lex Luthor as an alien and an unexploded Krypton) has apparently been tossed right out with him.

”IWith Superman production set for a total reboot, Batman Begins looking to be firmly on track, and a Harry Potter movie that actually has some style in the can maybe it’s time to start giving Warner Brothers some props (mad props even). We can’t hold a Matrix grudge forever, can we? On the other hand, maybe I should hold back on the Warner Brothers love. After all, next week they’re releasing Catwoman.

Still, at the very least Warner Brothers can be happy they aren’t Disney. What does it take to get Eisner fired? How many studios can say they passed on F911, missed out on The Passion, and drop kicked Pixar to the curb in favor of crappy Mickey Mouse 3D animation all in the space of less than a year. Disney’s future looks murky unless they can get away with producing monthly installments of Pirates of the Caribbean to fill their coffers. Yeah, we definitely aren’t giving the WB enough credit.

What to Watch

New movies come out each week. I don’t see all of them, but still feel qualified to tell you which movie you should watch. Feed your film habit from my picks. Three major releases this weekend but only one is worth your time.

If you are one of the few people even aware that The Door in the Floor is opening, you’re also probably one of the few who’ll be running out to see it. It’s not the kind of movie that gets promotion, attention, or attendance. But it is the kind of movie that might turn out to be under the radar good. It’s another of those easily overlooked movies Jeff Bridges has been doing so much of in the past few years. Everything Jeff picks doesn’t always turn into a classic, but he never does anything without at least a little merit. With that in mind, The Door in the Floor might be worth a look. Were it up to me though (and it is), I’d hold out for a sure bet. More on what that is in a couple of paragraphs.

Cinderella Story is the kind of movie I have to beg CB’s writers to review. Is anyone out there eagerly awaiting our take on it? Does anyone over twelve even care that it exists? Probably not, which is all the more reason to take just a minute and salute CB’s Matt Norris who has graciously agreed to take the hit. He’ll be handing in his review next week of this latest Hillary Duff bit of irrelevance and though I don’t care a whit about the flick I for one can’t wait to read it. As long as I don’t have to see the movie.

”aSome people just can’t accept the idea that Will Smith might be in a good movie. Those people are going to hate I, Robot no matter what. They’re the same types that automatically hate anything Adam Sandler is in, except of course Punch Drunk Love. But I, Robot IS a good movie. Fun, exciting, slick, even occasionally thoughtful. Though, when it comes to being Asimov faithful forget it. Of course that’s only to be expected since this isn’t an adaptation at all, just a movie with the name of one of Isaac Asimov’s books slapped onto it and his three laws crammed in to an already written screenplay as a means to justify the title. So no, it’s not a good adaptation, but it is a pretty good film… by far the best one being released this week. Forget Asimov and just enjoy what you’re seeing. It’s summertime for god’s sake! Aren’t you sick of politics and the various forms of self righteousness that accompany anything and anyone with a message? I know I am.
