The Film Habit #24 - October 15, 2004

The Film HabitI’m so mobile it’s scary. What’s a guy to do when he has a phone that can connect to the internet, besides the obvious search for porn? Use it of course. Maybe I shouldn’t have bought a phone with that capability. It’s way too pricey. Quick, everyone click some banners so I can afford to play Pong.

My Pong playing has taken up too much time this week. That means a shorter Film Habit. I’m sure that’s a great relief to all of you. Shorter, and with only a little less value than normal. You see, I ran out of creative juices about halfway through my review of Riding the Bullet. Right now I’m running on factual information, so don’t expect anything funny. Unless that was funny. Probably not.

Farscape Returns

The most important movie event of the week isn’t happening in theaters. It’s on the Sci-Fi channel, scheduled to go head to head with football or whatever divisive political grandstanding happens to be getting play. No, it isn’t a “Tremors the Series” special. Nor is it a bad 80’s horror movie, which is of course Sci-Fi’s usual forte. Sunday marks the premiere of Farscape: Peacekeeper Wars.

You’ve heard me talk Farscape before, and no doubt none of you listened. Those of you who ignored me are at this point irrelevant. If you haven’t watched the show before, I suspect this special won’t be for you. For those of us who have, it’s probably one of the more important events of the year, right up there with the November premiere of the Incredibles and the impending release of Halo 2. If you deserve to see it, you’ve got it marked on your calendar and have probably already ordered your pizza in advance. The rest of you go watch football, saddened by the knowledge that you missed out on one of the finest shows in television history. Stay ignorant. We don’t need you now.

What to Watch

New movies come out each week. I don’t see all of them, but still feel qualified to tell you which movie you should watch. Feed your film habit from my picks. America. Fuck yeah!

It’s a week of fairly inconsequential limited releases. Usually if they’re good enough they’ll get notice, but this crop seems to be resoundingly middle of the road. I’m suspicious of The Final Cut for instance because it is a Robin Williams movie that’s only being released to AMC theaters. Sounds like they’re giving up. P.S. may be watchable, but the name is patently unmarketable. Stage Beauty is getting the best buzz of the bunch, and I like Claire Danes, but its easily dismissed as a lesser clone of Shakespeare in Love. And I saw Riding the Bullet, so I can say with certainty its typical Stephen King filmmaking. Of course that means stay away.

Of the week’s wide releases, Shall We Dance is clearly the most broad. Which means it’s the kind of movie you can take your grandma to, but won’t want to watch yourself. So just drop granny off and skate on down to the best movie to see this weekend, Team America.

Team America: World Police is a serious kick in the pants that hits on all the usual Trey Parker and Matt Stone levels. Please don’t dismiss it as silly just because the movie features puppets and has a lot of fun blowing up sanctimonious celebrities. It’s also subtle (and sometimes clobber you over the head with it) satire that covers so much ground it has something to offend just about everybody. That’s a beautiful thing if you ask me. What’s really beautiful is if you can see it and still laugh at the parts which might most clearly be directed specifically at you. Or just laugh at Michael Moore smeared in mustard doing a silly little fat man dance. What I didn’t expect from the film was the complete absence of figures like George Bush, John Kerry, Osama Bin Laden, or Saddam. Unexpected, but probably a good choice. With or without them, Team America is all at once a hilarious and despicable film that is only better for having used puppets. Don’t shy away from the strings. Make it a point to see Team America.
